Alexander Nasmyth,  Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as George Hay, 7th Marquess of Tweeddale, with his horse and two dogs, in an extensive landscape

    Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Alexander Nasmyth,  Scottish 1758-1840-  Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as George Hay, 7th Marquess of Tweeddale, with his horse and two dogs, in an extensive landscape;  oil on canvas, 117.5 x 154.2 cm.  Provenance:  The Collection of Mrs Hamilton, according to an old label attached to the stretcher bar.  with Partridge Fine Art, London.  Property of the late Hugo Morley-Fletcher, MA FSA (1940-2022), (purchased from the above in 1998).  Note:  Nasmyth, often described as the 'founder of Scottish landscape painting', began his career as an assistant to the pre-eminent Scottish portraitist Allan Ramsay (1713-1784). After initially depicting individual sitters, from 1780 Nasmyth started to produce group portraits - revealing the influence of conversation pieces by artists such as Johann Zoffany (1733-1810) - including his portrait of the 'Children of William Ramsay of Barton' which sold at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, on 9 June 2019 (lot 9) for £78,000. The present composition successfully combines the artist's skill as a portraitist with the sweeping, dramatic landscapes for which he was chiefly celebrated, a formula which is also very much evident in other paintings, as in his portrait of Lady Honyman and her Family in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland [PG 2303]. Nasmyth shaped the nature of Scottish painting and was the teacher of a generation of important British artists including David Wilkie (1785-1841), David Roberts (1796-1864), Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793-1864), and Andrew Wilson (1780-1848).  George Hay, 7th Marquess of Tweeddale DL (1753-1804) was a Scottish peer and naval officer. He was a great-grandson of John Hay, 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale and the former Lady Mary Maitland (a daughter of John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale). In 1785, he married Lady Hannah Maitland, a daughter of James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale and Mary Turner Lombe. Together, George and Hannah were the parents of eleven children.  We are grateful to Lady Cooksey, author of 'Alexander Nasmyth 1758-1840', for confirming the attribution of the present lot.

ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) A VIEW NEAR EDINBURGH

    Est: £8,000 - £12,000

ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) A VIEW NEAR EDINBURGH Inscribed and dated on the backboard 'A view near Edinburgh taken by Mr Nasmyth Senr. for John Cockburn 1788', oil on copper, circular, and a companion, a pair, similarly inscribed (18cm (7in), diameter) Qty: (2) Note: This pair of Edinburgh scenes date to 1788 when Alexander Nasmyth is recorded as spending much time, and deriving much pleasure from, walking around his native city, often accompanied by his friend Robert Burns. His famous portrait of Burns (National Galleries of Scotland) was painted the previous year and was also executed on a small scale typical of Nasmyth’s early work. A 1788 Edinburgh directory describes his profession as ‘portrait and landscape painter’ but by the end of the decade Henry Raeburn’s near-monopolisation of Edinburgh portraiture compelled Nasmyth to concentrate on landscapes. This proved an astute decision: he would go on to become known as ‘the founder of the Scottish landscape tradition.’ This fascinating pair of compositions capture the artist at a formative period in his career when his distinctive style was being cultivated. A View Near Edinburgh portrays figures crossing a bridge near a smart cottage, with an imposing Edinburgh Castle just visible through the trees behind; its companion piece portrays a peasant family by a roadside in front of a dilapidated cottage. It is possible the pair were conceived to convey a moralising message; equally, they may have been intended as charming conversation pieces evoking the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ of Edinburgh society. The close attention Nasmyth paid to Northern Old Masters is evident, particularly in the restrained and earthy palette and the interest in portraying scenes of day-to-day life with intense detail. Nasmyth’s son and biographer James recorded that his father admired Hobbema, Wynants and Ruysdael in particular, and the British Museum holds a collection of Nasmyth etchings that demonstrate his awareness of early Northern artists including Nicholaes Berchem (one such etching dates to 1771, when Nasmyth was only thirteen).

◆ ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) DALHOUSIE CASTLE

◆ ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) DALHOUSIE CASTLE Oil on canvas (112cm x 167cm (44in x 66in)) Literature: J. C. B. Cooksey, Alexander Nasmyth HRSA, 1758-1840: A Man of the Scottish Renaissance, Haddington, 1991, p.100, ill.Q5 Note: By the 1800s Alexander Nasmyth's skill as a landscape painter was such that he was confident working on an ambitious scale, yet due to the numerous demands on his time relatively few pictures survive from this period. Between 1790 and 1810 he was remarkably industrious: in addition to supporting his large young family, he was setting up an art school where he taught classes and was also working on an ever-expanding portfolio of theatrical, engineering and landscape design projects. Nasmyth came from a line of architect-builders, and as a youth had been trained to take over the family business by his father but opted to pursue painting instead. It was not until later in life that he began to take on architectural and landscape-design commissions, embodying the Italian ideal of the architetto-pittore. James Nasmyth wrote: ‘My father was much employed in assisting the noblemen and landed gentry in improving the landscape appearance of their estates, especially when seen from their mansion windows. His fine taste, and his love of natural scenery gave him great advantages in this respect… he designed alterations of the old buildings so as to preserve their romantic features, and at the same time to fit them for all the requirements of modern domestic life.’ (ed. S. Smiles James Nasmyth, Engineer: An Autobiography, London, 1883, pp.36-37) Nasmyth often presented his clients with artworks which illustrated his proposed improvements to their estates, and it is possible that it was in this architetto-pittore capacity that Nasmyth painted Dalhousie Castle in Cockpen, Midlothian. (J. C. Loudon, An Encyclopaedia of Gardening, London, 1822, p.1250, no.2218) The sweeping landscape incorporates views of the thirteenth-century redstone castle and its strategic vantage point over the River Esk, all set against rolling hills stretching into the distance. The pleasures of the grounds are demonstrated by several figural vignettes: hunters and their dogs rest in the foreground; a pair fish by the Esk; animals graze throughout. Particular attention is drawn to the dramatic views enjoyed on the approach to Dalhousie, with various figures accompanied by dogs walking up the gently curving path, and a waiting horse and carriage outside the Castle. Dalhousie Castle affords the viewer an interesting insight into Nasmyth’s practice during a period when he produced few paintings, and is of exceptionally fine quality. It possesses all the hallmarks of the artist’s hand, including the distinctive ‘Nasmyth-style’ craggy trees, meticulous detail, a soft, golden light, and the use of dark framing devices around the edges of the picture to enhance its sense of depth and theatricality. The result is a highly evocative bucolic vision realised on a monumental scale.

ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) STIRLING CASTLE WITH THE UPPER PART OF THE FORTH Oil on panel (45cm x 61cm (17.75in x 2in)) Provenance: Mrs Alexander Bannerman Christie's, London, 25 February 1888, lot 156 to Carritt Christie's, 17 June 1983 Spink & Son, London Literature: J. C. B. Cooksey, Alexander Nasmyth HRSA 1758-1840: A Man of the Scottish Renaissance, Southampton 1991, p.110, Ill. Q44A (as 'oil on canvas') ‘At all events, we cannot help having a due regard for our forefathers. Our curiosity is stimulated by their immediate or indirect influence upon ourselves.’ - James Nasmyth, James Nasmyth Engineer: An Autobiography, John Murray, London, 1883 Alexander Nasmyth is best-known as ‘the founder of the Scottish landscape tradition’, but his earliest training was as a decorative painter. His talent earned him the attention of Allan Ramsay, a leading portrait artist and court painter to George III. Nasmyth spent four years training in Ramsay’s London studio, and directly afterwards he predominantly produced portraits for the nobility. Commissions waned when word spread about the young artist’s liberal politics, and a two-year period of study in Italy finalised Nasmyth’s move away from portraiture. Upon his return to Edinburgh in 1784 Nasmyth established himself as an accomplished painter of landscapes. Architectural components recur throughout his compositions, reflecting Nasmyth’s abilities as an engineer and architect; accordingly, he often fulfilled commissions to design and expand the estates of the Scottish nobility. In the 1790s Nasmyth designed 47 York Place, Edinburgh, for his family. The plan incorporated residential quarters in the top floor apartment and two garret storeys in the roof to accommodate teaching space and a studio. With the opportunity for European travel limited by the Napoleonic Wars, it was an astute time to establish a school of art. Aspiring artists enrolled to witness Nasmyth’s ‘familiar and practical’ lectures accompanied by demonstrations, with the household becoming a thriving hub in Edinburgh’s early nineteenth-century ‘cultural Renaissance’. Notable attendees included David Wilkie, Francis Grant, David Roberts, Clarkson Stansfield, William Allan, Andrew Geddes and the Rev. John Thomson of Duddingston. Nasmyth also taught middle-class women, for whom painting and drawing were important social graces. Tutelage was supported by Nasmyth’s daughters, who sometimes led sketching tours around familiar Edinburgh vistas including Duddingston Loch, Craigmillar Castle, Roslin, or the Forth estuary. Raised in a uniquely artistic and intellectual environment, it is of little surprise that the Nasmyth children understood the principles of drawing and painting. It is remarkable, however, that so many possessed natural artistic talent. Of his eleven children at least eight were gifted artists: his six eldest daughters Jane, Barbara, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anne and Charlotte, and his eldest son Patrick and younger son James. James observed that ‘my father’s object was to render each and every one of his children…independent…accordingly, he sedulously kept up the attention of his daughters to fine art. He set on foot drawing classes…managed by his six daughters, superintended by himself.’ The Nasmyth children benefited from intimate access to their father’s paintings and expansive drawings portfolio, including many early copies of Old Masters made at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh and Allan Ramsay’s studio. It also contained numerous landscape sketches observed from life, overwhelmingly portraying England and Scotland. Only a few European sketches survive, likely made during Nasmyth’s Italian studies, but charmingly these continental landscapes appear to have been pored over by the Nasmyth children, and can be seen to have inspired passages in their mature paintings. They all went on to paint landscapes almost exclusively, with each adopting a personal interpretation of their father’s style.

  • ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) THE MILLER'S LINN, INVERARY
    Dec. 09, 2021

ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) THE MILLER'S LINN, INVERARY

    Est: £6,000 - £8,000

ALEXANDER NASMYTH (SCOTTISH 1758-1840) THE MILLER'S LINN, INVERARY Signed and dated 1807, oil on canvas (56cm x 86.5cm (22in x 34in)) Footnote: Note: Alexander Nasmyth is remembered as the father of Scottish landscape painting. This delightful Inverary scene depicts industry and leisure: while figures on both banks enjoy an afternoon of fishing, the mill’s puffing chimney indicates work taking place within. The landscape is rendered with characteristic meticulousness, while retaining an atmosphere of romance and charm, demonstrating Nasmyth’s mastery of the genre. Alexander Nasmyth was born in Edinburgh in 1758, and would go on to become a key figure of the Edinburgh cultural Renaissance at the start of the nineteenth century. Initially apprenticed as a heraldic painter to a coachbuilder, his talent was identified by Allan Ramsay, who employed Nasmyth at his London studio. Here, he honed his painting technique working on minor areas of Ramsay’s compositions, while gaining an invaluable insight into the business of studio commissions. In 1778 Nasmyth returned to Edinburgh, and soon became an in-demand portrait painter. He travelled to Italy in 1782 to further study painting, a venture made possible by a loan from the banker Patrick Miller of Dalswinton. Miller would remain Nasmyth’s patron throughout his career, and as an expression of gratitude Nasmyth named his first son Patrick, who himself would go on to be a significant Scottish artist. Patrick Nasmyth also painted the Miller’s Lynn, Inverary in 1818. Alexander Nasmyth remained in Italy for two years, travelling around the country and developing his skills as a painter of landscapes. Upon his return to Scotland he developed a close friendship with Robert Burns, and the pair would often enjoy long walks together across central and southern Scotland. Nasmyth’s famous portrait of Burns now hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. From 1792 Nasmyth concentrated on landscape painting in the Dutch style. Architectural structures often feature in his scenes, owing to his enduring interest in building and engineering. Many of his designs for members of the Scottish nobility were realised, including the Dean Bridge in Edinburgh and a temple covering St. Bernard’s Well by the Water of Leith. By 1815 his reputation was such that he was invited to submit a proposal for the expansion of Edinburgh’s New Town. Nasmyth’s influence on Scottish landscape painting cannot be understated. He established a painting school at his home on York Place, Edinburgh, teaching pupils including Sir David Wilkie, David Roberts and Clarkson Stanfield. He insisted that his followers draw with their subject before them, rather than working from existing drawings or paintings. Wilkie would later describe Nasmyth as ‘the founder of landscape painting in Scotland [who] by his taste and talents took the lead for many years in the patriotic aim of enriching his native land with the representations of her romantic scenery’.
