Born in London, Nares studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and has works in major museum collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Albright-Knox Art Museum. Known for her large-scale calligraphic brushstroke paintings, the present work, which combines metallic pigment and enamel, is a departure from the artist’s gestural strokes compositions with its graphically bold, linear design. Condition report: Top edge of canvas is very slightly concave along stretcher bar, especially at the corners. There is a slight rub mark at top left, approx. 4 in. long in an arc shape and four or five very light diagonal rub marks at bottom right corner, approx. 4 in. long. The bare canvas on either side of the painting, stretched around the sides, shows light soiling, one stain at left edge approx. 10 in from top and a few small scuff marks and stains near top right corner. Top and bottom edges were not able to be examined. The painting is in overall excellent condition.
