      • "SACRED KANNON TEMPLES" JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY UCHIDA
        Nov. 17, 2016

"SACRED KANNON TEMPLES" JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY UCHIDA

        Est: $600 - $800

"SACRED KANNON TEMPLES" JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY UCHIDA Complete set of ten Japanese woodblock prints, each 9" x 12" and mounted in a 9 3/4" x 13" mat, by HIROMITSU NAKAZAWA (1874-1964), and printed by the Uchoda company of Kyoto, circa 1950. Each finely executed and colored print depicts a scene from one of ten Buddhist temples in western Japan dedicated to Guanyin, or Kannon, a bodhisattva associated with compassion and forgiveness. These scenes include shrines and altars, carved deities, offerings of prayer, priests reading written prayers, and temple grounds and architecture. The set is contained in a paperboard folder with an ink wash drawing of a temple, with the title in kanji printed in black ink. Each print bears the artist's printed signature, as well as a number on the verso which corresponds to a key inside the front cover of the folder, listing the location of each scene. The verso of each print also bears a black ink "SAMPLE" stamp. These prints were salesman's samples acquired by a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Thomas Hood, who sold these prints in the eastern United States on behalf of Uchida. These are excellent examples of "Sosaku hanga" prints, which were produced based on a Western model of printmaking, in which the artists retained creative control over their works, and which utilized a unique synthesis of Japanese and Western aesthetic techniques. Some insignificant toning and folds to the folder, else very good to fine.
