Born in 1905 in the Olympic Peninsula, a densely forested region of the United States, Nakashima graduated with a degree in architecture from Seattle's University of Washington before studying at France's prestigious Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts Fontainebleau.

To win over the public, Nakashima specifically chose to work with visually seductive woods such as laurel, dark walnut, Carpathian elm and rosewood. He developped a unique finish which he called "Sundra", which means "beautiful thing". The artisans at Widdicomb handmade the pieces that made up the original Origins series based on George Nakashima own techniques, which he supervised himself to guarantee the desired level of craftsmanship and precision.
