MATTHYS NAIVEU (Leiden, 1647-Amsterdam, 1726). "Character by a candle". Oil on canvas. Signed. Relined. It presents restorations.

    Est: €4,000 - €4,500

MATTHYS NAIVEU (Leiden, 1647-Amsterdam, 1726). "Character by a candle". Oil on canvas. Signed. Relined. It presents restorations. Measurements: 40 x 33 cm; 47 x 40 cm (frame). Painting of Dutch school, signed by Matthys Naiveu, who lived in the epoch of splendor of the Dutch genre painting, of which he himself echoes in his achieved scenes of interior. In this case, a solitary character next to a candle introduces us to the intimacy of his state of mind, which the author achieves with the use of contrasting light and the subjugating expression of his face. Matthijs Naiveu was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age. He trained initially with Abraham Toorenvliet (1620-1692), a glass painter and drawing instructor (father of Jacob Toorenvliet), and later learned the art of painting with Gerrit Dou. For much of his life he lived and painted in Amsterdam, where he worked as a "hops inspector" for the Amsterdam brewers. His works were basically genre painting; interiors with cheerful groups, people drinking tea or playing cards. In 1671 he joined the Guild of St. Luke in Leiden. His early paintings, such as "Children Blowing Soap Bubbles" (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), are heavily influenced by Gerrit Dou, with architectural elements framing the scene.
