Inscribed on the stretcher: "Nahl a Rome / S. Louis". Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. The Staatliche Museen in Kassel keep a comparable drawing with the same theme by Nahl the Younger as well as the painting "Olint und Sophornia", which is stylistically very closely related. Questo pregevole dipinto, firmato sul retro 'Nahl', raffigura il momento in cui Ippomene riceve l'aiuto di Venere a vincere la gara contro la cacciatrice Atalanta, per averla così in sposa. La dea Venere dà al campione Ippomene tre mele d'oro del giardino delle Esperidi: l'eroe facendole cadere, distrae la fanciulla abbasta a lungo da vincere la corsa. Noto principalmente come disegnatore, Johann August Nahl II fu anche un raffinato pittore di soggetti mitologici, ritratti ed episodi tratti dalla storia romana. Il pittore dimostra, attraverso l'idealizzazione delle forme, l'abbandono dei dettami barocchi e della loro irrazionalità, la nuova adesione agli ideali classici della seconda metà del Settecento.

Originaltitel Studie für die 1793 voll ausgeführte Zeichnung in der Albertina in Wien (Inv.-Nr. 14842). Dargestellt ist eine Szene aus dem Trojanischen Krieg im Tempel der Vesta nach Vergil. Nahl erhielt seine malerische Ausbildung bei J. H. Tischbein d. Ä. in Kassel, an der Pariser Akademie sowie in Straßburg und Bern. Die vorliegende Zeichnung entstand während seines zweiten Rom-Aufenthaltes (1783-1792) und zeigt Einflüsse Jacques Louis Davids. Feder u. Pinsel (bzw. lavierte Tusche) in Braun sowie Weißhöhungen/Papier. Am rechten Bildrand sign. u. röm. dat. 1791. Ca. 55 cm x 42 cm. Rahmen. Ink and washed ink in brown and whitening on paper. Nahl d. J., Johann August 1752 Zollikofen - 1825 Kassel, zugeschrieben Der Zug der Aurora (nach Guido Reni) Öl auf Lwd. 50 x 92 cm. Rest. Rahmen min. besch. Das Gemälde zeigt den Zug der Aurora, begleitet von sieben Stundengöttinnen, den Horen, sowie den vierspännigen Wagen des Apollon. Die Kopie geht auf das Deckenfresko von Guido Reni im Palazzo Rospigliosi - entstanden 1612-1614 - in Rom zurück, das im 19. Jahrhundert als eines der bedeutendsten Gemälde der Kunstgeschichte galt. Die alte Zuschreibung an Johann August Nahl d. J. ist durchaus denkbar, denn der Künstler hielt sich 1774-1781 in Italien, meist in Rom, auf und schuf dort Kopien von Antiken und Alten Meistern, ein zweiter Aufenthalt folgte 1783-1793 bis er sich wieder in Kassel niederließ.
