Not examined outside of frame. Sheet is hinged to backing sheet. Minor toning throughout. Wear along extreme edges. Tiny loss to the top left corner. Framed behind acrylic measuring 10 x 13 inches.

          Ethel K. Myers (American, 1881–1960); Bronze, "Lady with Dog, 1919" Signed Ethel Myers and dated in base with edition 3/7 signed by her daughter with the initials V.M.D.. Good condition. Height of bronze 11 1/8 inches (28 cm.). Note: A figurative sculptor and art activist in New York City, Myers studied at the Chase School and the New York School of Art. After her marriage to artist Jerome Myers in 1905, she switched from painting to sculpture, specializing in caricature bronzes of city people. The original plasters were only cast in bronze after her death by her family in small editions.

          ETHEL MYERS The Widow. Plaster with light brownish tan coloring, 1913. 210 mm; 8 1/4 inches (height). Signed, dated and inscribed "©" on the base. Ethel Myers (1881-1960) exhibited nine sculptures in the Armory Show, including the current work. She is known for her social realist sculptures of city dwellers, influenced by Robert Henri. Her early Ashcan paintings gave way to figurative sculpture after her 1905 marriage to Jerome Myers, whose career eventually overshadowed hers.

After her marriage to artist Jerome Myers in 1905, she switched from painting to sculpture, specializing in caricature bronzes of city people, often shown in numerous poses. Nine of these works were exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show. Her subject in this bronze, cast in 1920, is Florence Reed (1883-1967), a stage, screen, and television actress known for her comic roles and emotional acting style. Myers shows her here in a straight, loose flapper dress. The first-known owners of this work were the author and publisher, Leslie George Katz, and his wife, poet and novelist, Jane Mayhall Katz.
