      • Jan Sadeler, Girolamo Muziano - Magdalene in the desert
        Dec. 12, 2024

Jan Sadeler, Girolamo Muziano - Magdalene in the desert

        Est: €280 - €360

Engraving signed Jan Sadeler excudit, showing Magdalena in the desert. She is shut in by a rocky ravine, bridged by a natural arch on which grow great forest trees. The play of the sunlight gives beauty and vitality to this scene of solitude. This work, made by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) or someone from his near circle, is based on the larger format engraving made by Cort for Girolamo Muziano (1532-1592) as part of his set of' Six Penitent Saints'. The landscape is largerly copied but instead of a standing Magdalene in front of a crucifix, we see here a kneeling Magdalene holding a crucifix in here right hand and reading a book.

DER HEILIGE FRANZISKUS EMPFÄNGT SEINE STIGMATA Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 111 x 84 cm. In mit Blattwerk reliefiertem Rahmen. Beigegeben ein ausführliches konservatorisches Gutachten von Piotr Fraczek, Cultural Heritage Conservation, Pekowice, 2024. Ebenso eine Materialanalyse vom Laboratory for Analysis and Non-Destructive Testing of Historical Objekts, National Museum, Krakau, ohne Datum. Nov. 29, 2023

Exceptional Saint Jerome in Meditation, attributed to Girolamo Muziano (1528 - 1592), Italian Renaissance school of the 16th century

        Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Small oil on canvas, possibly a private devotional commission, this magnificent Saint Jerome of bright colors, careful composition and very fine details directs his sorrowful gaze to the crucifix that he holds in his arms as a sign of Redemption against the sin of men, while that different iconographic elements such as the skull and the trumpet allude to the end of time. Accompanying the composition, the lion and the Patron's characteristic red hat. Canvas measurements: 45 x 37 cm, framed measurements: 65 x 54 cm. Girolamo Muziano was born in Acquafredda, near Brescia, on a date that is not precisely known but that indirect sources place around 1528-1532. After an initial training in local tradition, in the years 1544-1546 he studied in Padua, where he had to learn the art of Lambert Sustris, and then went to Venice, where he would remain until 1549. Appointed superintendent of the Holy See, Muziano received numerous commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII and designs mosaics, with which he achieves surprising pictorial qualities. Mention may be made of those of the Cappella Gregoriana of St. Peter's Basilica. With abundant works in Spain, the Cerralbo Museum in Madrid houses a large-format canvas of his, Saint Augustine and Saint Monica, while the Resurrection of Jairus's daughter and an album of drawings of the reliefs are preserved in the monastery of El Escorial. of Trajan's Column. Provenance: important Andalusian private collection, Spain.

        Est: €20,000 - €25,000

GIROLAMO MUZIANO (Acquafredda, 1528 - Rome, 1592). "Saint Francis. Oil on canvas. Relined. Size: 100 x 73,5 cm; 120 x 93 cm (frame). In this sober and devotional scene, the painter represents St. Francis in an exterior that can hardly be appreciated due to the tenebrism of the scene. The saint is kneeling in prayer with his hands folded on his chest. The thick brushstrokes define a rounded figure of profound humanity, with great economy of colour, limited to the range of browns, which only serves to emphasise the message of humility and mystical simplicity that the saint advocated throughout his life. A twilight light emerges from the distance, modelling the elements of the landscape, but giving prominence to the figure which seems unique in the solitude and stillness of divinity. The subject of the Saint of Assisi receiving the stigmata was one of Mutienzio's favourites and was reproduced several times with the collaboration of his assistants, beginning with the version now in the Roman church of Santa Maria della Concezione, which Patrizia Tosini dates to around 1575 in her monograph on the painter. Aesthetically, Gerolamo Muziano was incisively and lastingly seduced by the invention of the great master Sebastiano del Piombo, to whose dissemination various replicas produced in his workshop contributed. In addition to reworking the same compositional scheme in many paintings on different themes. Muziano was born in Acquafredda near Brescia but worked principally in Rome. According to accounts from the 16th to 20th centuries, Muziano began to work under the tutelage of Romanino, an imitator of Titian. However, a quasi-autobiographical account of Muziano written by his confessor (unpublished until 1954) indicates instead that Muziano was born in Brescia, left that city as a young man and that his first apprenticeship was under the tutelage of Domenico Campagnola and Lambert Sustris in 1544-46 in the city of Padua. He then spent some time in Venice until 1549, but moved permanently to Rome around 1550. Landscapes figured prominently in Muziano's early works, leading the Romans to nickname him Il giovane dei paesi (the young man of landscapes). Although he produced drawings and paintings in this genre throughout his career, his interest shifted towards large-format figure painting. Muziano painted religious and historical subjects in a style largely based on Michelangelo, emphasising the monumental anatomy of his figures, even in works depicting ascetic saints. Michelangelo himself declared him to be one of the "first artists of that time". Muziano became the most important artist in Rome in the 1570s and 80s, painting in a style that appealed to Counter-Reformation patrons.

(Brescia 1532–1592 Rome) The Holy Family, inscribed lower left with an inventory number: 529, oil on canvas, 100.5 x 76.5 cm, framed Inscribed on the back of the canvas with the letters ‘C.C.B.’ Provenance: Private European collection We are grateful to Patrizia Tosini for confirming the attribution of the present painting and for her help in cataloguing this lot. Tosini dates the present to between the mid-1550s and the early 1560s, and it therefore belongs to the period of his first Roman commissions. There are close points of comparison with his other work of these years, and especially those executed for Orvieto: the altarpiece with the Resurrection of Lazarus for the city’s cathedral (1555–1556; see P. Tosini, Girolamo Muziano, 1532–1592, dalla maniera alla natura, Rome 2008, cat. no. A7, p. 86, fig. 70) and the frescoes for the palace of bishop Girolamo Simoncelli in the nearby Torre San Severo (1556–1559). These are works which display the same monumental and ‘stony’ pictorial language as in the present Holy Family. The Virgin’s profile compares to that of the two women at the centre of the altarpiece for Orvieto, in which the colouring of the robes is also echoed, while the head of Saint Joseph is modelled after that of Winter in the ceiling of the Salone della Caminata of the Palazzo Simocelli (see P. Tosini, Ibid., 2008, cat. no. A9, pp. 340–343, fig. 9.1.3), even down to the pulsing vein in the old man’s temple, which also reoccurs in the profile of Saint Jerome in the Ruiz chapel in Santa Caterina dei Funari, Rome (see P. Tosini, Ibid., 2008, cat. A15, p. 184, fig. 168). The subject of the painting, the Holy Family in the company of the Infant Saint John the Baptist, prefiguring the Passion of Christ, must have been particularly successful in the artist’s repertoire, since he replicated it in various compositional arrangements, some of which are documented in engravings created to Muziano’s designs (P. Tosini, Ibid., 2008, p. 55 fig. 45). In Muziano’s biography it is stated that ‘A Madonna, life size, with Saint Joseph, Saint John and our Saviour which would move stone to devotion’ (‘Una Madonna come al naturale con San Giosef S. Giovanni e il nostro Salvatore che muoverebbe le pietre a devozione’) (see U. Procacci, Una ‘vita’ inedita di Girolamo Muziano, in: Arte Veneta, 1954, pp. 251–252; see. P. Tosini, Ibid., 2008, cat. no. D61, p. 487). A painting with the same iconography is also recorded in 1686 in the collection of Maffeo Barberini, in his family’s Roman palace at the Quattro Fontane (this also has the same dimensions as the present painting, which is only slightly smaller, possibly owing to its having been relined; see Getty Provenance Index) and another of the same subject was at Villa Medici during the nineteenth century (see P. Tosini, Ibid., 2008, cat. D55, p. 485). In addition to that under discussion, at present two other versions of this composition are known: the first is identical in all its parts and is manifestly an autograph replica, taken from the same cartoon (see P. Tosini, Ibid., 2018, cat. A2, p. 23). The second is in the Galleria Borghese and is also an autograph work by Muziano, but it has suffered a singular ‘camouflaging’ owing to the intervention of a late seventeenth century painter (see P. Tosini, Palinsesto borghesiano: un Muziano ‘seicentesco’, in: Amica Veritas. As yet it has not been possible to identify the number ‘529’ painted lower left, which is evidently the record of its belonging in a collection. The sculptural composition of the painting and its cool palette, reveal Muziano’s understanding of Roman mannerist culture of the 1540s and 1550s, incarnated by its emerging protagonists Daniele da Volterra, Girolamo Siciolante and Taddeo Zuccari; meanwhile, the elegant head of Saint Joseph with his rippling veins and soft hair, modelled after the naturalistic paintings of Girolamo Savoldo and Domenico Campagnola, with its Lombard and Venetian mood, fully reveals the inheritance of the artist’s training. Girolamo Muziano (1532–1592) is one of the leading exponents of later sixteenth century Roman painting. He trained in Brescia, Padua and Venice in the studios of Lambert Sustris and Domenico Campagnola, and he arrived in Rome in the 1550s, probably thanks to the protection of the Venetian Cardinals Barbaro, Corner and Pisani. His positive reception in the city gained him many prestigious commissions in the churches and palaces of the leading aristocratic families in the city: the Colonna, Gabrielli, Ruiz, Mattei, and Della Valle. During the 1560s he became court painter to Ippolito II d’Este, for whom he frescoed the celebrated Villa d’Este in Tivoli. With the advent of Pope Gregory XIII Boncompagni (1572–1585) he became the organiser and author of all the most important commissions of the pontificate, including the Cappella Gregoriana in Saint Peter’s and the Galleria delle Carte Geografiche in the Vatican Palace. His singular style of counterreformation painting tempered by a soft Venetian realism was to open the way for the most innovative aspects of early seventeenth century painting.

Girolamo Muziano (Italian, 1528-1592) Study after Michelangelo's Rachel on the tomb of Julius II; An ancient Roman holding fasces (recto and verso) Black chalk heightened with white on blue paper (recto); Black chalk (verso) 9-1/2 x 6-1/8 inches (24.3 x 15.6 cm) PROPERTY OF A NEW YORK ESTATE PROVENANCE: Nathaniel Hone (1718-1784) (his mark lower right corner); Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) (his mark lower right corner); Michael Miller Lucy Vivante Fine Arts, Inc., New York, New York. LITERATURE: Lugt no. 2793 and no. 2364. The two collectors' marks stamped in the lower right corner of this sheet prove that two arch-enemies in the art world of 18th-century England once had something in common. Portraitists Nathaniel Hone and Sir Joshua Reynolds both admired this handsome drawing by Muziano enough to include it in their respective (sizable) drawing collections. Hone created a cause célèbre in 1775 when he submitted to the jury of the Royal Academy a painting called The Conjurer (Dublin, The National Gallery of Ireland), depicting a bearded Reynolds pointing a wand towards a fire which was kindled by an assortment of Old Master prints from which a framed oil painting emerged. Hone's meaning was that Reynolds cribbed motifs from Old Master sources to try and elevate his own work. Leaning over the Conjurer's knee was a portrait of a young girl meant to depict fellow Academician Angelica Kauffman, allegedly Reynolds' lover, and also an artist involved in various ambitious Reynolds' projects including the scheme to decorate St. Paul's Cathedral. The Academy rejected the painting on the grounds it was offensive to Kauffman. Hone's reputation suffered since many viewed his scandalous prank as basically sour grapes. HID01801242017
