Jay Musler Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1949 -

Jay attended a pilot program in the California College of Arts and Sciences where he came under the influence of the glass artist Marvin Lipovsky. Work in a production glass studio offered Jay the technical facility for handling glass in a wide variety of ways, from stem glasswork to mold blown goblets. Yet from the start Jay’s works posed questions and contrasts beyond their being attractive or useful. He received grants and fellowships from the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Jay’s artistic career is distinguished by the art of creating multiple meanings with intricately constructed or assembled sticks of glass inspired by boats, buildings and masks. Skeletal wrecks and masks they seem to represent. These complex compositions of sandblasted plate, patinated glass are in the collections of many U.S. museums as well as in he Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, Sapporo, Japan.
