Lawrence Murley Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1962 -

Born in the 1960's, Lawrence is a native of Cornwall. After 6th Form College his favourite subject, geology, led him into a career in mineralogy, working in the Geology Department at Geevor Tin Mine.

But Cornish mining days were sadly numbered so Lawrence, influenced by his by his artist mother, Theresa Gilder, combined his two passions and took to carving stones he had collected, exploring their texture and adaptability.

Today, his sculptures of reptiles, amphibians, mammals and crustaceans are carved in a selection of beautifully coloured stones, including Connemara Marble from Ireland, Picasso, Lavender and Pink Marbles from Utah, USA and various marbles from Turkey.

But his favourite marble remains Cornish Serpentine from the Lizard Peninsula, because it has such a variety of colours, hardness and oily texture.

The tactile quality and beauty of Lawrence's work can only be experienced in reality. It's not surprising that his sculptures have received wide acclaim in both the UK and the USA.
