              Gabriele Münter, Landschaft, Circa 1904/05

              Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Stamp "GABRIELE MÜNTER NACHLASS" verso. In 1902 Gabriele Münter attended various courses at the Phalanx school of painting in Munich, including Wassily Kandinsky's painting class. She completed her first oil paintings in this period and practised the palette-knife technique, which was also important for Kandinsky's work at that time and whose clearly accentuated application of the paint is plainly recognisable in the work offered here. It is one of Münter's earliest landscapes - a subject that would define her entire oeuvre. The artist found inspiration for her nuanced depictions of the surrounding landscape during her travels or in her adopted home of Munich and its countryside.

              Nov. 29, 2024

              Gabriele Münter, Heiteres Blumenbild, 1949

              Est: €60,000 - €80,000

Signed and dated 'Münter 1949' in black lower right and signed, titled, and dated 'Gabriele Münter Heiteres Blumenbild 1949' verso in blue chalk on a label on the stretcher. Münter's work number 'B 40' on a label attached to the stretcher as well as stamped "GABRIELE MÜNTER NACHLASS" on the canvas. The title of our important still life by Gabriele Münter inevitably discloses itself to viewers in the richly nuanced, predominantly red palette of the abundant bouquet of flowers, which achieves the greatest degree of luminosity in interaction with the blue-and-red background. With its alert gaze the white majolica dog to the left almost seems real. Münter had already owned this ceramic piece since the period she spent with Kandinsky. Regarding this highly expressive painting, the exhibition catalogue of the major Münter retrospective at Munich's Lenbachhaus states: "The special status of the 1949 work 'Heiteres Blumenbild' (formerly Nachlaß B 40) among the larger still lifes of the late years is already demonstrated by the choice of painterly medium: oil on canvas. Here the painter formulates a new style, which would remain binding for her last important stylistic period. The picture already displays the painterly concentration of the round flower heads by means of the gently applied and rarely interrupted brushstrokes that fill Münter's best sill lifes with an almost sculpturally vital inner life." (Annegret Hoberg/Annika Öhrner, catalogue no. 239, Heiteres Blumenbild, in: exhib. cat. Gabriele Münter Retrospektive, op. cit., p. 295). How important the work was to the artist herself is documented by the fact that in 1957, at the age of 80, she still chose to have herself photographed with our floral still life on an easel in the background. A print of this photograph accompanies the painting.

            • Gabriele Münter, Blumen auf Blau, 1944
              Nov. 29, 2024

Gabriele Münter, Blumen auf Blau, 1944

              Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Signed 'Münter' lower left in black. Signed, dated and titled 'Gabriele Münter 1944 Blumen auf Blau' verso in blue chalk, and with work number '17/44' and stamp "GABRIELE MÜNTER NACHLASS". In the final years of her work, Gabriele Münter primarily turned her attention to painting floral still lifes. “The flowers remain, which have come from the garden into the house”, writes her second life partner, Johannes Eichner. “Inexhaustible wealth of colours. If a canvas is not immediately available, then the painter reaches […] for paper and works on it with oils” (cited in: Gabriele Münter, exh. cat. Lenbachhaus, Munich 1992, no pag.). Münter painted the majority of her late flower arrangements on a light, often white, ground. But she has placed the flowers of the picture here in front of a deep-blue backdrop that makes our painting an exception. In a blue-and-white vase standing on a table largely cut off by the edge of the picture, four pale-pink or red dahlias form a frame around the white Japanese anemone in the middle. In many of her still lifes, she also combines the flower vase with a second object – in this case, a black jug that energises the simple arrangement. The compact, often rounded mode of representation with narrow or occasionally broader contours is characteristic of Münter’s late still lifes. These outlines, whose origins lie in a period when she was occupying herself with the folk art of reverse glass painting, set the forms off against the monochrome background. The painting “Blumen auf Blau” displays a simplicity in its composition, a realism in its details and a richly contrasting colour scheme that are characteristic of the still lifes of the 1940s. This is the period in which Münter brought her floral still lifes to their final state of maturity.

Notation: Monogrammed lower left: MÜ (artist's signet). Here additionally inscirbed with the work number: LB 5/55. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. The present work listed in the artist's workbook from 1935 under the no. Pp5. We are grateful to Dr. Isabelle Jansen, Gabriele Münter- und Johannes Eichner-Stiftung, Munich, for the kind scientific support. Provenance: - Private collection North RHine-Westphalia (through long-standing succession) - A unique work of irresistible intensity - Luminous work that is one of the masterful creations on paper - Expressive colour space modulation in the artist's unmistakable pictorial language - From a productive creative phase in Murnau, during which numerous landscapes were created Tradition and avant-garde Gabriele Münter, born in Berlin in 1877, is one of the outstanding protagonists of German Expressionism, along with Paula Modersohn-Becker and Marianne von Werefkin. As a co-founder of the artists' group “Der Blaue Reiter”, she made a breakthrough in a new, spontaneous style of painting. Münter's works are characterised by strong, bright colours, simplified forms and an intense, emotional pictorial language that reflects the influence of folk art and her engagement with nature. Her painting combines tradition and avant-garde. As a student and partner of Wassily Kandinsky, she played a central role in the development of modern art in Germany and continues to have a lasting influence on European art history to this day. With Red Sun In Murnau am Staffelsee, where Gabriele Münter lived until her death in 1962, numerous paintings and watercolours were created. Most of them are landscape motifs and still lifes. The landscape watercolour ‘Mit roter Sonne’ (With Red Sun) probably shows Lake Staffelsee with the rising morning sun in white wafts of mist. The foreground of this atmospheric landscape painting is characterised by green meadows and two solitary trees that harmoniously frame the motif on both sides. In the centre of the picture lies the lake, whose colour is reflected in the depiction of the mountain range, the typical cone-shaped mountains for Münter, on the horizon. In between, there are gently rolling brown hills that flow rhythmically into one another. The glowing red sun, surrounded by light clouds of mist, forms an exciting accent in the overall composition. The thinly applied areas of colour are outlined in dark contours, which Münter lets merge into one another in a rhythmically staggered manner or sets off against one another, thus largely eliminating the spatial effect. The deliberate omission of the painting ground, which shimmers through in a beige colour, makes it an essential part of the work and creates a certain lightness and transparency. A companion piece to the work offered is the painting ‘Staffelsee mit Nebelsonne’ from 1931, which shows strong compositional similarities (Fig. 1). In contrast to this, however, ‘Mit roter Sonne’ excitingly points to a lack of human or animal existence. Only nature itself is exposed to its own forces here, which seems incredibly mysterious to the viewer. In a subtle way, Münter impressively describes the primitiveness of life and the associated everlasting cycle of becoming and decaying. Thus, Münter not only describes the pure atmosphere of a foggy day in the mountains, but also her subjective perception in the face of what she has found. Exhibitions: Galerie Wilhelm Grosshennig, Dusseldorf (with label on the frame). Deutsche und französische Kunstwerke des 20. Jahrhunderts. Gemälde-Plastiken-Aquarelle-Handzeichnungen, illustration on page 79. Das Thema des Gartens mit Akazien schien Gabriele Münter immerhin so reizvoll, dass sie es, begleitet durch Skizzen und Aquarelle, in mehrfachen Variationen aufgriff. provenance: Galerie Wilhelm Grosshennig, Dusseldorf (with label on the frame) / Collection of Richard König, Duisburg / Private collection, Rhineland We would like to thank Dr. Isabelle Jansen for her kind support during cataloguing.

GABRIELE MÜNTER (Berlin 1877–1962 Murnau) House by a lake with blue mountains. 1933–35. Oil on board. With estate stamp verso. 38 × 40 cm. Provenance: - With Galerie & Edition Schlégl, Zurich. - Bühler Collection, Landhaus Waldbühl, Uzwil, acquired on 16.11.1971 from the above gallery. The work is registered in the artist's estate under number L201 (labelled and inscribed verso). "[...] nowhere had I seen such a wealth of views combined as here [...], between lake and high mountains, between hilly land and moss" (Isabelle Jansen, Matthias Mühling (ed.): Gabriele Münter 1877–1962. Malen ohne Umschweife. Prestel, Munich 2017.) In their search for a suitable place to settle, Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky discovered the picturesque Murnau on Lake Staffelsee in 1908. For Münter, the enchanting town around the "Blue Lake" with the surrounding mountains and the fertile moor had a magical appeal. Her painting style underwent a radical change there. She says goodbye to the impressionistic style of previous years and delves deeper into surfaces, lines and colors, thereby finding her own expressionism. In 1909 Münter purchased a house in Murnau. Today known as the "Münter Haus", it was then called the "Russian House" because, in addition to Münter, Kandinsky, Jawlensky and Werefkin were frequently there. This four-person artist community is nourished by lively exchange and through mutual support and inspiration. Months of productive work begin and the environment develops into Münter's favorite motif, which she returns to again and again throughout her career. In these rural surroundings, Münter also discovered Bohemian and Bavarian reverse glass painting, its simple shapes and black lines providing important inspiration for her creative path forward. Even after separating from Kandinsky, she repeatedly returned to Murnau, where she finally settled down in 1931 with her new partner Johannes Eichner. From the surrounding hills, she repeatedly paints the multifaceted landscape, which shows different color nuances depending on the time of day and the weather. "House by the Lake with Blue Mountains" is a wonderful example of these sophisticated depictions of the landscape around Lake Staffelsee. From an elevation, she captures the area enveloped in an afterglow by depicting the image's elements through clearly demarcated color areas. This reduction and choice of colors makes the landscape appear particularly sophisticated and atmospheric. ------------------------------------------------- GABRIELE MÜNTER (Berlin 1877–1962 Murnau) Haus am See mit blauen Bergen. 1933–35.
