Sebastian Munster Typus Orbis Universalis (from Cosmographiae Universalis Lib. VI In Quibus Iuxta Certioris Fidel Scriptores...) [1572] copper engraving on paper with hand-coloring 12.25 h x 15.75 w in (31 x 40 cm) First published in 1544, Cosmographia was one of the most popular 16th century books, with about 40 editions in a century, including translations into Czech, French, Italian, and Latin. This oval projection map was from the Latin edition. Continents are outlined, with a large Northwest passage above the North American continent, which shown with the east coast nearly separated by the Sea of Verrazzano. The mythical islands of Calensuan and Grisonum are shown near the location of Australia. The demand for Cosmographia was largely driven by the wood-engraved maps; the block for this map was cut by David Kandel with his initials in the lower left corner. Provenance: Collection of Dr. Bernard Rubin, Chicago Literature: Shirley 92 | Rumsey 15058.005 | Collecting Old Maps, Manasek, pg.170 This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

Woodcut, 28,5 x 37,5 cm (light traces of central fold). - Rare early map of the Low Countries. Münster reworked his 5 earlier maps of the Rhine-region (see lot 460) to 3 maps, this one being the last one, covering Brabant, the southern part of Holland and the province of Utrecht. As this map is much cruder, the influence of Van Deventer is no longer recognizable. First published in the 1545 ed. of Münster's "Geographia universalis [...]". Latin text on verso (numb. 38). - Ref. Karrow 58/123. - Cp. Karrow 58/110.

Brabantia V Rheni et X nova tabula.

                Est: €200 - €300

Woodcut, 25,7 x 33,7 cm, hand-coloured. - Scarce early map of the Low Countries, very probably after Van Deventer as the hydography is virtually identical. Münster showed the course of the Rhine in 5 maps, this one being the last, covering the lower course; showing o.a. the cities Antwerp, Brussels, Roermond, Cologne, Bonn, etc. After 1542, Münster reworked the 5 Rhine-maps to just 3 (see lot 461), thus this map only appeared in 2 editions. Extracted from Münster's 1540 ed. of "Geographia universalis [...]". Latin text on verso (numb. 38). - Ref. Brabantia ducatus 2. - Karrow 58/110.

                Oct. 10, 2024

                Munster’s Cosmographia with over 100 Maps (1560)

                Est: $32,500 - $40,000

Complete Edition of Cosmographia with over 100 Maps & Views Sebastian Munster, La Cosmographie Universelle, Contenant la Situation de Toutes les Parties du Monde, avec Leurs Proprietez & Appartenances, published 1560. Black & white. Sebastian Munster probably had more influence in spreading geographical knowledge throughout Europe in the mid-sixteenth century than any of his contemporaries. His Cosmographia contained not only the latest maps and city views, but also included an encyclopedic amount of detail about the known, and unknown, world and its history. Henrich Petri, step-son of Sebastian Munster, was the publisher of Munster's Geographia and Cosmographia. After Henrich Petri's death in 1579, his son Sebastian Petri took over the publishing business and commissioned a completely new set of woodblocks for the Cosmographia. Over the years, the text was enlarged and new maps were added. This French edition includes maps of the world, ancient world, the 4 continents, 8 regional maps, plus over 1000 woodcuts including 2 long folding views (of Vienna and Heidelberg), 37 double-page plans and views, and 66 smaller maps and views. Also included is the famous plate of Munster's Monsters, engravings of exotic animals, and a portrait of Sebastian Munster as the frontispiece. Of particular importance is Munster's map of the western hemisphere, La Table des Isles Neufues, lesquelles on Appelle Isles d'Occident & d'Indie, which is one of the most Important sixteenth century maps of the New World. The influence of Marco Polo's 13th century explorations in Asia are evident with the 7448 islands in the North Pacific and Zipangri (Japan) shown only a short distance off the western coast of North America. The North American continent is very oddly shaped without a California landmass and the eastern region is nearly bisected by a body of water, known as the Sea of Verrazzano. The Yucatan is still shown as an island, Cozumel is named nearby as Cozumela, and the lake at Temistitan is connected to the Gulf of Mexico. South America has a large bulge on the western coast, the Amazon River is very short, and cannibals inhabit the continent shown with the name Canibali next to a gruesome vignette with human limbs. The map is very decorative with Magellan's surviving ship Victoria appearing in the Pacific. This example of the Cosmographia is complete. The title page has been erroneously updated with a cut-out of the publisher's imprint from the 1555 edition, which has been glued onto the page, however the colophon correctly states the publication date of 1560. Small folio. Frontispiece; title page; dedication page; [16] pp.; 14 double-page maps; 1337 pp. with over 1000 woodcuts and 105 maps and plans. The pages of this example have been ruled. Handsomely rebound in full mottled leather with embossed frame on covers; five raised bands with two black leather title labels on spine; and new endpapers. LITERATURE: Betz #3; Burden #12; Mickwitz & Miekkavaara #157; Shirley #76 & #92; Walter #8; Yeo #2.

                Est: $500 - $1,500

This engraving is from Sebastian Münster & Claudius Ptolemy's Geographiae Claudii Ptolemaei Alexandrini, Philosophi ac Mathematici praestantissimi, Libri VIII... his accesserunt... tabulae novae... per Sebastianum Munsterum. The work was published in 1552 in Basel by Henricus Petri. This map is a fine example from the fourth and last edition of Munster's Ptolemy. The work originally included 27 Ptolemaic maps (World, 10 Europe, 4 Africa, 12 Asia) and 27 new maps drawn by Sebastian Münster and David Kandel (World, 22 Europe, 2 Asia, 1 Africa and 1 America). On the verso of each map is a descriptive text surrounded by an ornate woodcut border, often attributed to Holbein. On verso of the map of America Novae Insulae, there is the printer's device of H. Petri with the publishing date M.D.LII. The atlas held great signficance for it's map of the New World, one of the most important ones in the history of American Cartography. The atlas also featured the earliest representation of Japan on a map, pre-European contact. It also named the Pacific Ocean for the first time, Mare Pacificam. Philip D. Burden noted about Münster's first map of America: "(This map) sealed the fate of America as the name for the New World..." This work is considered a later published ediiton of Ptolemy (Ptolemaeus)’s Geographia. The work was considered one of the most influential cartographic accounts of the ancient world and served as inspiration for all Renaissance mapmakers. He compiled what was known of the world's geography in the Roman Empire during his time (circa 90-168 AD). Ptolemy was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet. The earliest known manuscripts of Geographia date to 1300 and was first printed in 1477. Sebastian Munster (1489-1552) was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and a Hebrew scholar. Est: $300 - $600

About the engraving: This is one of the most famous charts of mythical sea monsters. The monsters were derivative of Olaus Magnus's Carta Marina from 1539. It reflects the Renaissance attitude towards the unknown lands beyond civilization. The image is one of the most sought after curiosities of the 16th century. One vignette shows a galleon trying to outrun one monster by throwing their cargo overboard, while one sailor takes sight with a musket. It features beasts of land and sea. While many are the stuff of fantasy, many are based upon depictions from Scandinavian sailors and whalemen encounters. The monsters included are whales, giant lobsters, sea serpents (perhaps oarfish), and possibly an Orca and walrus.
