Emile Munier Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Portrait painter, Genre Painter, b. 1840 - d. 1895

(born June 2, 1840 Paris, France; died June 29, 1895) French painter. Originally planning to become an upholsterer like his father, Emile Munier began his career at the Paris tapestry factory Les Gobelins. In the early 1860s he started training with his father-in-law Abel Lucas to become a painter, and in 1871 he abandoned his upholstery career to paint. In 1872 he studied under the tutelage of William Bouguereau, and exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1869 until close to his death in 1895. By the late 1870s Munier became well known for his signature subject matter depicting cupids and young children inspired by his own son and daughter, sitters in many of his works. In 1873 he met the American art agent George A. Lucas, who introduced his work to America, making him popular to wealthy clients both in Paris and abroad. Able to execute the human form and convey emotion effectively, Munier’s work appealed to the increasingly influential middle class as well who appreciated the cheerful and innocent nature of his paintings. This is particularly reflected in the works which were later used for advertising Pears Soap. Munier received an Honorable Mention from the Salon in 1882 and was a member of the Society of French Artists.

Émile Munier (French, 1840–1895) Mother and Daughter in an Interior (The Adored One) Signed and dated 'E. MUNIER 1891' bottom left, oil on canvas 35 x 25 in. (88.9 x 63.5cm) Provenance Private Estate, Alabama. Acquired directly from the above, circa 1985. Private Collection, Birmingham, Alabama. Note We wish to thank Howard L. Rehs from Rehs Galleries, Inc. for confirming the authenticity of the present work, which is now accessible on the online Catalogue Raisonné of the Artist's work at www.emilemunier. A Certificate of Authenticity will be released to the winning bidder. Although he was destined to become an upholsterer at the Manufacture des Gobelins, just like his father, Émile Munier eventually turned to painting. He first studied under the direction of Adolphe Lucas, and later worked with the great master of the French Academic manner, William Adolphe Bouguereau, whose smooth style and painstaking attention to details are on full view here. Munier was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1869 to 1895, where he received an honorable mention for his painting La Source in 1882. The present painting appears to be directly linked to Le Lever, which was exhibited at the Salon in 1889–an important year as it marked France’s landmark Exposition Universelle for which the Eiffel Tower was erected. The present work depicts an intimate moment between a mother and her young, angelic-like daughter, as she emerges from sleep and puts her socks on. The two figures are depicted in full-length, in a modest interior which does not seem to affect the sitters’ happiness, as they blissfully smile at each other, unpreoccupied by the viewer’s presence. Although Bouguereau painted similar familial scenes, Munier’s diffused sense of proximity, and love between the characters make his work all the more touching and sincere. By the time of the completion of the present work, at the height of the artist’s career, Munier had lost his first wife shortly after the birth of their son Émile Henri in 1867. He remarried in 1872, and scenes of children and domestic tranquility, as in the present painting, became an important theme in his oeuvre. While Munier’s own wife and daughter, Marie-Louise, were frequently subjects of his paintings, it seems it is not the case here as the daughter’s hair appears fairer than in other known images of Marie-Louise. May. 15, 2023

Emile Munier: Little Girl with Dog

        Est: €6,000 - €8,000

MUNIER, EMILE Paris 1840 - 1895 Title: Little Girl with Dog. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 83 x 62.5cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower right: E. Munier 1892. Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. The present work is by the French academic painter Émilie Munier, who trained under the eminent neoclassicist William-Adolphe Bouguerau. The artist was particularly versatile: in addition to numerous paintings with religious and mythological themes, he distinguished himself as a brilliant portraitist of children. Munier often used his own children as models for his works. The "Little Girl with Dog" fits into the artist's canon of personal styles: it shows a curious-looking girl having a snack after shopping at the snow-covered weekly market. Her watchful gaze is completely focused on the viewer although at the same time she is being jumped on by a small dog. In accordance with the academic ideal, Munier shows his artistic skills in realistic depiction: the girl's curl flashing out from under the headdress, as well as the texture and structure of the clothing, and the dog's fur are truly to be felt in their haptics. Emile Munier: Children on the Stairs

        Est: €15,000 - €20,000

MUNIER, EMILE Paris 1840 - 1895 Title: Children on the Stairs. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 66 x 51cm. Notation: Signed lower left: E. MUNIER. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. This painting is a very typical one by the French painter Émile Munier. Two children, a boy and a girl, are sitting barefoot on a stone staircase in the open air. The two seem very familiar, a sibling relationship is conceivable. The little boy has hooked his left arm on the person sitting next to him and together they look at a sheet of paper with small drawings lying on his lap. The girl, who is clearly older, holds knitting tools in her hand and devotes herself to the drawings together with the young boy. Munier became known for such sentimental genre scenes of children, mostly his own, and is still very appreciated by collectors today. He first began an apprenticeship at the Gobelins, the historic tapestry factory in Paris, to follow in his father's footsteps. But his love of painting won out and so he devoted himself exclusively to it. He received many commissions and mostly portrayed children with their pets. Often the children he painted were his own - he frequently immortalised his daughter in particular on canvas.

Emile Munier (French, 1810-1895) The shepherdess, 1888 Oil on canvas 30 x 17-1/4 inches (76.2 x 43.8 cm) Signed and dated lower right: E. Munier 1888 PROVENANCE: L.A. Lanthier, New York, circa 1890-1910; Private collection, New York; Findlay Galleries, Kansas City, Missouri; Private collection, Tulsa, Oklahoma, acquired from the above; Thence by descent. This work is included in the online Émile Munier catalogue raisonné by Rehs Galleries, Inc., www.emilemunier.org. Emile Munier was at the height of his career in the late 1880s, when he painted The shepherdess. An ardent proponent of French academic painting standards, Munier closely followed in the footsteps of his esteemed teacher, William-Adolphe Bouguereau. While he had honed his skills finely enough to mimic Bouguereau's meticulous attention to detail and delicate handling beautifully, Munier developed a distinctive personal touch that is always distinguishable in his work. He specifically was able to capture the fleeting expressions and subtle gestures of his subjects, such as a demure smile or a loving pat of an animal friend. From the start of his career, Munier was a decorated artist: he received three medals at the Beaux-Arts and in 1869 he exhibited at the Paris Salon. From 1886 onward, the artist and his family would take trips to Auvergne, in the southern French countryside. There, he became interested in scenes of children in rural situations, producing numerous scenes of young peasants and farm animals. Like his mentor, Bouguereau, Munier was drawn to the allegorical nature of a young shepherd or, in this case, shepherdess. Completed in 1888, the painting shows a young peasant girl taking a well-deserved break from her busy job tending sheep. Her canine companion keeps watch as she quietly amuses herself with a small wildflower, resting her staff on her shoulder. Her posture gives off an air of casual confidence: a young woman content with what she is doing. Similar to his signature images of young children and their domestic pets, Munier's depiction of the young woman offers the same sense of intimacy and youthful charm. Her direct, unflinching gaze welcomes the viewer with no ulterior motive: she is simply proud of her work. The shepherdess has been in the personal collection of a Tulsa, Oklahoma family for many years. In fact, just across town from where Munier's Shepherdess was displayed, a painting of a very similar subject by Munier's mentor, Bouguereau, and painted just a year later, hangs in the permanent collection of the Philbrook Museum of Art. MUNIER 1882' (lower left)oil on canvas21 x 25in (53.5 x 63.5cm) Provenance: Private collection, Hot Springs, Arkansas, since 1930s;Thence by descent to the present owners.Born into a modest working class family from Paris in 1840, Emile Munier and his two brothers followed into their father's footsteps as upholsterers at the Manufacture Nationale des Gobelins, where they started their artistic training under the tutelage of Abel Lucas. Emile distinguished himself as a particularly gifted artist, exhibiting at the Salon from 1869 onwards. During the 1860s, Munier experienced tremendous challenges and joys. His new wife, Henriette bore him a son, Emile Henri, and died six weeks later. During the same time, his artistic standing rose dramatically after receiving three medals at the Ècole des Beaux-Arts. He also frequented the studio of William Bouguereau and adopted his academic teachings, which are quite apparent in his works executed after the early 1870s. A second marriage to a young painter, Sargine Augrand, produced a daughter, who became his most frequent sitter. Munier's two children, Henri and Marie-Louise, were the artist's primary source of inspiration beginning in the early 1880s and they appear frequently in his work. Munier established himself as the most popular painter of children and their pets among French and American collectors. The present painting is one of his most popular compositions, which he repeated several times, substituting a cat or a doll for the dog. The little girl with blond curls on a pillow trimmed with lace, appears invariably in all variants, and her posture is repeated in Munier's popular Trois amis from 1885, a composition that was reproduced extensively in many forms. Munier continued to exhibit at the Salon many delightful compositions of children and cherubs until his death in 1895 at the age of 55.We are grateful to Howard Rehs for confirming the authenticity of this work, which will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist. A certificate of authenticity accompanies this lot.
