STILLLEBEN MIT ZITRONEN UND CHINESISCHEM PORZELLAN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 52 x 65 cm. In ebonisiertem Kehlrahmen. Literatur: Vgl. (Reggio Emilia 1667–1720 Pisa) Anemones, peaches and a glass bottle on a pewter plate, roses, next to a lute, a basket of eggs and bunches of herbs underneath, a landscape and architecture beyond; and Anemones, roses, asparagus, lemons, grapes and apples, bread, a flask of wine and ricotta cheese in a wicker basket, a landscape beyond, oil on canvas, each 65 x 51 cm, framed, a pair (2) Provenance: art market, Bologna; where acquired by the present owner We are grateful to Francesca Baldassari for confirming the attribution of the present painting and for her help in cataloguing this lot. In these two pendants, depicting compositions of flowers, fruit and kitchen objects, some anecdotal details stand out, such as the representation of a basket of ricotta cheese or the presence of fanciful architecture in the background inspired by the palaces of the Venetian lagoon. However, the detail of the bunch of asparagus, which was a typical product of the hills between Pistoia and Lucca in the early 18th century, allows us to locate the painting’s provenance in the Tuscan area. The fast and rich brushstrokes found in the present pair suggest a date of execution towards the end of his artistic career, after his successful stay in Florence 1703–1715. The stylistic features and the repertoire of objects depicted in these canvases allow the pair to be ascribed to the painter from Reggio Emilia, but Tuscan by adoption, Cristoforo Munari. The products of nature present in the pair are similarly found in many of the painter’s so-called ‘kitchens’, praised by the biographer Francesco Maria Niccolò Gabburri ('Vite de‘ pittori', Firenze circa 1730–1740) as the most convincing genre of the painter, who also painted refined salon paintings, trophies and trompe l’oeil. It is superfluous to list all of Munari’s still lifes in which a similar wine flask, lemons, jugs of water appear (see F. Baldassari, Cristoforo Munari, Milan 1999). Cristoforo Munari trained in Emilia, but towards the end of the century he moved to Rome and then at the beginning of the 18th century to Tuscany. A skillful still life painter, he began by producing compositions of kitchen utensils, slices of meat, cheese tips, then his style evolved and musical instruments as well as refined Chinese porcelain began to appear in his paintings, becoming almost his signature. After the early death of his main patron, Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici (1713), he moved to Pisa to practice mainly as a restorer.

(Reggio Emilia 1677–1720 Pisa) Porcelain cups and a - ‘Façon de Venise’ glass on a salver, with a ewer of wine, a peeled lemon, peaches and other fruit, all before a plinth with a cello, a recorder and scores of music, oil on canvas, 100 x 75 cm, framed Provenance: Collection of Lorenzo Pellerano (1847–1931), Buenos Aires; his sale, J. C. Naon, Buenos Aires, 27 August 1938, lot 350; Private collection; sale, Christie’s, New York, 25 January 2002, lot 41, sold for $ 138,000 (as Cristoforo Munari) The present painting is a typical work by the Emilian artist Cristoforo Munari, one of the leading Italian still life painters of his time. The realistic treatment of materials, the attention to detail and the objects juxtaposition of surface textures evident in this work, characterise the artist’s production. The subtle effects of light on the various items reflect the painter’s mastery: From the transparency of the ewer and wineglass filled with wine, to the reflection of the porcelain on the metallic salver and to the solid carving of the wooden musical instruments. In many of Munari’s compositions Chinese porcelain is represented as a precious treasure symbolising the wealth, pride, and elegance of patrician households. Several of Munari’s still life compositions similarly contain a pewter plate, books or sheets of music, and such porcelain dishes as beakers and bowls, including those in the Galleria Estense, Modena and the Uffizi, Florence (see F. Baldassari, Cristoforo Munari, Milan, 1998, cat. nos. 32, 63). Munari began his career in his native city as a protégé of Rinaldo d’Este, Duke of Modena, before travelling to Rome in 1703, where he found patronage among the leading aristocratic families. By 1706 he had moved to Florence and there completed commissions for Ferdinand de’ Medici, Cosimo III, and Cardinal Francesco Maria de’ Medici.

Cristoforo Munari was born in the Emilia region of Italy. During his early career, he specialised in rustic kitchen still lifes. After moving to Rome in the late 17th century, he began to include costlier props such as Chinese porcelain bowls and silver dishes to his repertoir of motifs, and these became his trademark. The pieces featured in this work can be found in many other paintings by the artist. The authenticity of this piece has been confirmed to the current owner by Francesca Baldassari.
