William James Muller Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Landscape painter, Painter, Miniature painter, Water colorist, b. 1812 - d. 1845

British oil painter William James Muller, born 1812 in Bristol, is known for his landscapes and figural art. His early work was influenced by French artist Claude and Dutch painter Ruysdael. Artist William James Muller was well traveled in his short life, and in 1843 he joined a government-led archeological visit to Lycia, Turkey, at his own expense. He built up a significant portfolio of sketches during this time that he used for subsequent artworks, which included many Muller's figural paintings.

Artist William James Muller's paintings of Lycia and Egypt became popular after his death from heart disease in 1845. His landscape The Falls at Tivoli sold for over $13,000 in 2010 at Christie's. Embrace the Victorian fine arts and browse many vintage oil paintings for sale

Literature: Francis Greenacre and Sarah Stoddard, W. J. Müller 1812-1845, 1991, page 70: ’The Bristol Riots of October 1831 were the nineteenth century’s bloodiest riots in England. For nearly two days the city was effectively in the hands of the mob. Prisons, toll-houses, the Bishop’s Palace, the Mansion House, the Custom House and much of Queen Square were destroyed. Together with his younger brother, Muller witnessed nearly all this destruction as it happened. Before such dreadful havoc, Muller’s response was bold and accomplished and his watercolours and small oil sketches form one of the most remarkable visual records of a national disaster before the advent of the camera’. It is impossible to determine when or how soon after the riots (which took place in Bristol between the 29th and 31st October 1831) this sketch was made. One sepia and pencil drawing (private collection) of the burning of the Mansion House just moments before the present work, has extensive and hurried pencil work and might well have been largely executed on the spot (see Greenacre and Stoddard, figure 6, page 72). The present work has the same powerful immediacy. See also Greenacre and Stoddard, (page 20, colour plate 6) for the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery’s oil sketch of the Mansion House scene.

Attributed to William James Müller,  British 1812-1845 Street scene in Algeria;  oil on canvas, 61 x 92 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Müller studied under James Baker Pyne (1800-1870), and is often considered a central member of the Bristol School of Artists. Müller's most popular works were his Egyptian and Turkish scenes, which were informed by his travels in the Middle East, visiting Greece and Egypt in 1838-39, and Turkey in 1843-44. The present scene exhibits many of the features which define Müller's work, including the darker architectural setting contrasting dramatically with the bright, colourful skies behind, as in his 'Chess Players', which sold at Sotheby's London on 21 March 2001 (lot 88), and his 'Street in Cairo, Egypt', held in the collection of Leeds Art Gallery [LEEAG.PA.1929.0874].

Muller Original Watercolor, Rialto Bridge, Venice

          Est: $15,000 - $30,000

MULLER, William James (1812-1845). The Rialto Bridge, Venice. Watercolor over pencil highlighted with touches of bodycolor. Signed l.r. "W Muller/1835(?)'. 17 3/4" x 29 1/2" sheet, 29" x 40 3/4" framed. An early 19th century polyglot in the tradition of the Grand Tourists, Muller traveled to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy with the watercolor artist and member of the Royal Society of Painters George Arthur Fripp. They reached Venice on 29 September 1834, staying there for nearly two months before going on to Rome and beginning their return journey on 16th January 1835. Though a number of drawings and watercolors sketches were made on this journey, Muller continued to paint Venetian subjects as late as the 1840s. The present work may be identical with the one exhibited at the Society of British Artists in 1836. It shows the Rialto Bridge with the 18th century campanile by Giovanni Scalfarotto and the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, a multipurpose structure built by mainly German merchants from the cities of Augsburg, Judenburg, and Nuremberg. The streets along the canal include genre-scenes of mercantile activities: the loading and unloading of boats, the displaying of fabrics and a gondolier maneuvering between the barges. Muller's style is very linear and displays the classicist approach to Venetian vedute with a heavily geometric composition and visible pen-lines. Muller became the apprentice of James Baker Pyne who introduced him to the Bristol Sketching Club together with artists Samuel Jackson, J. Skinner Prout, and William West. He departed from the poetical style of their landscapist and imaginary subjects and exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1833. After Muller's return from Italy, he sent works to the Royal Academy in 1836 and to the Exhibition of the Society of Artists in Suffolk Street in 1836, 1837, and 1838. He visited the Middle East twice and accompanied the government expedition to Lycia in southwest Turkey where Charles Fellows was removing the Xanthus Marbles for the British Museum in 1843/44. A series of sketches from a journey to France was lithographed in 1841. Muller died in Bristol on 8 September 1845 at only 33 years of age. He works have continued to be in high demand, but seldom come to market.
