    • Jan Harmensz. Muller - Joannes Neyt with skull - 1608
      Dec. 12, 2024

Jan Harmensz. Muller - Joannes Neyt with skull - 1608

      Est: €440 - €650

Portrait of Joannes Neyn (1560–1612), half-length to right, wearing a crucifix (resting on the table before him) and resting his hand on a skull, a winged hour-glass on a ledge beyond. Jan Neyen was a Franciscan friar and diplomat from the Habsburg Netherlands, who was involved in negotiating the Twelve Years Truce of 1609–1621'. At the bottom a handwritten text that emphasize his courage and perseverance to realize this treaty. On te wall on top the date of te portrait 'Aetat XXXIIX °° IDC IIX' So he shoud have been 38 years in 1608 but that does not really match with his given date of birth and his physiognomy. More likely he was 48 years and the engraver missed an X in the date. Here a fourth state fourth state signed below and at right of inscription in lower margin: "M. à Mierevelt pinxit." and "J. Muller sculpsit" and "Cum privil Sexen. / Ordin. Holland.". The engraving dates from 1608.

Serenissimo et potentissimo Alberto Austriae / Serenissimae Isabellae Clarae Eugeniae Hollstein 62/63. Jan Muller, son of an Amsterdam printer, printmaker and publisher, was one of the most sought-after Mannerist printmakers at the end of the sixteenth century, who developed a style modelled on that of Hendrick Goltzius, the leading draughtsman and printmaker in the northern Netherlands. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, he began to engrave portraits, mostly of important political figures, reproducing painted portraits by various artists. Among the largest and most complex are the portraits of Joannes Neyen, Prince Maurits, and the present work, Albert and Isabella of Austria Two engravings (2 x 40 x 29.5 cm) by Jan Muller after P.P. Rubens (1577-1640), printed in 1615, narrow margins, 2 small repaired tears in border, very fine impressions of the 3th state of four (2)

Venus and Mercury, oil on panel, 64.5 x 50 cm, framed Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands, since the 1950s The composition of this striking panel follows a print by Jan Harmensz. Muller (1571–1628) of circa 1600 (New Holl., 68), after a drawing by Bartholomeus Spranger (1546–1611) now in the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut (inv. no. 1974.38). Another version, of larger measurements, dated 1601, was sold in these rooms (see sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 9 November 2022, lot 8). The latter and the present panel are very early examples of the Prague school of painting, demonstrating all the characteristics of the mannerist taste of Emperor Rudolph II, such as the intertwined bodies and the overall sensual mood. The date of the present panel has been confirmed by the dendrochronological analysis of the oak support by Peter Klein. As stated in his report dated 23 February 2023, the support consists of two wooden boards taken from the same tree, whereby the youngest heartwood ring dates from 1581 – allowing the earliest possible felling date to 1588 and the earliest possible creation of the painting to 1590. Mercury and Venus as lovers is rarely depicted as a mythological subject. More common is Venus’ depiction of the love affair with Mars.

      Oct. 25, 2018

Two Framed Lithographs attr. Robert Mapplethorpe, 1980s

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Attributed to Robert Mapplethorpe (American, 1946-1989). An untitled 2 in 1 lithograph. Ca. 1980s. Two stamped lithographs of Classical Rape of the Sabine theme, the ancient story in which Roman soldiers forcefully took their brides in masse. The one on top is Jan Harmensz Muller (Dutch, 1571-1628) after Adriaen de Vries (Dutch, ca. 1545-1626) "The Rape of the Sabine Woman, Frontal View, ca. 1598) - see http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/123078. The composition, with dynamic twists and turns of the struggle, displays a masterful rendering in the fabulous Mannerist style. Mannerism emerged after the High Renaissance, inspired by the late works of Michelangelo that emphasized rippling musculature, elongated nudes, contorted poses, and eccentricity as opposed to the quiet harmonious compositions of artists of the High Renaissance such as Raphael. Size: engravings measure 14.875" L x 9.625" W (37.8 cm x 24.4 cm) and 11.75" W x 9.625" H (29.8 cm x 24.4 cm); 31.125" L x 18.125" W (79.1 cm x 46 cm) including mat and frame Mapplethorpe was a gifted photographer who is best known for his homoerotic photographs and his unfortunate early death from AIDS at age 42 in 1989. In 2005, the Guggenheim Museum highlighted Mapplethorpe's interest in classical themes in the exhibition entitled, "Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition: Photographs and Mannerist Prints." In this show, Mapplethorpe's "Thomas and Dovanna" (1986) was paired with Jan Harmensz Muller's "A Roman Abducting a Sabine Woman" from "The Rape of the Sabine Women" (16th century). See Mark Stevens' New York Magazine review of this exhibition which begins with this juxtaposition - http://nymag.com/nymetro/arts/art/reviews/12308/. Stevens opens his review with a poignant observation, "The best thing about 'Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition: Photographs and Mannerist Prints,' which recently opened at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, is that it lifts the gauzy filters. It treats Mapplethorpe as an artist, not just a gay artist, and situates him in the great tradition of classical art."
