SAINT CLAIR AUGUSTIN MULHOLLAND (PHILADELPHIA, 1839-1910) MARINE PAINTING, watercolor and gouache on paper, depicting a beach with a fishing schooner, small boat, figures at a haul of fish, and seagulls, signed "S. A. Mulholland" lower left. Unframed. Fourth quarter 19th century. 13 1/2" x 24". Catalogue Note: Mulholland's family emigrated to Philadelphia in 1850, where he joined the local Pennsylvania Militia as a youth. At the opening of the Civil War, he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 116th Pennsylvania Infantry / Meagher's Irish Brigade. He served with distinction, was wounded several times, and was promoted to full Colonel in 1864. After the War, he was appointed brevet grade of Major General of Volunteers. In 1868, Mulholland was appointed Chief of Police in Philadelphia. During the 1880s, he traveled to London and Paris to study and paint, primarily watercolor marine scenes in Europe, like the present example.
