    Oil on canvas laid to Masonite USA, circa 1900 Alexander Mueller (1872-1935) – American painter Signed lower right ‘ALEXANDER MUELLER’ Dimensions: 14 1/8 x 20 1/8 in. (35.9 x 51.1 cm.) Estimate $1,000-$1,500 Lively with movement and brushstrokes, this nocturnal landscape depicts a group of people circled around a large bonfire, its light warming up the composition. Reflected in the waters below, the fire moves up the image, drawing the viewer’s eyes to the starry night above. Surrounded by darkened trees, the work has an element of voyeurism. Executed circa 1900, this oil on canvas laid to Masonite is signed in the lower right, measuring 14 1/8 x 20 1/8 inches. Slight frame abrasions; ½ x 1 inch loss and tear in upper right; Under UV, Green masking varnish along edges; retouch along left side of female figure and in lower left corner; dime sized area of retouch in dog and in lower right edge. Alexander Mueller (American, 1872-1935) Wisconsin artist Alexander Mueller was born to German immigrant parents. After studying at the Wisconsin School of Design, Mueller then went to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After returning to Milwaukee, Mueller founded the Society of Milwaukee Artists, and became the director of the Milwaukee Art Students League. An influential teacher, one of his most widely known students was Edward Steichen. Apart from his teaching, Mueller is best known for his artworks depicting Wisconsin and California landscapes along with scenes from Europe. His works can be found in the public collections of numerous museums in Wisconsin, including the Milwaukee Art Museum, UW-Milwaukee, and the Museum of Wisconsin Art.
