Alfons Mucha Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Commercial artist, Illustrator, Photographer, b. 1860 - d. 1939

Alfons Mucha was born in Czechoslovakia in 1860, and studied art in Paris and Munich. Alfons Mucha's drawings were often his own perceptions of the ideal female form. His poster Gismonda, made for actress Sarah Bernhardt's play of the same name, used subtle pastel colors and lighting that accented the crown of her head. Alfons Mucha's drawings also focused on the hair, eyes, and lips of the women portrayed. Mucha continued this revolutionary technique throughout his career, creating theater posters, advertising materials, and magazine covers. A series of Alfons Mucha's paintings of Czech and other Slavic people, entitled Slav Epic, was restored after WWII and placed in the permanent collection at Moravsky Krumlov's castle. Alfons Mucha's art for sale includes illustrations, posters, and canvas paintings. Delve into interesting theatrical and artistic periods by viewing magnificent posters for sale online, and purchase a piece for your home.

Alphonse Mucha, Art Nouveau Color Lithograph from Les Maitres de l'Affiche

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Original color lithograph of Alphonse Mucha's celebrated poster Bieres de la Meuse, published as part of Les Maitres de l'Affiche (Plate 182). Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, this piece exemplifies Mucha's signature Art Nouveau style, featuring a central female figure adorned with a floral and wheat headdress, symbolizing abundance. The composition is enriched with swirling lines, organic motifs, and stylized typography, hallmarks of Mucha's work. The advertisement promotes the Meuse brewery with intricate vignettes of beer production scenes in the lower portion. Mucha was a pioneering artist and graphic designer of the Art Nouveau movement, renowned for his distinctive style characterized by flowing lines, decorative elements, and ethereal female figures. Born in Moravia (now the Czech Republic), Mucha initially worked as an illustrator before gaining international fame in 1894 with his iconic poster for the French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt in Gismonda. His success led to a long-term collaboration with Bernhardt and a prolific career in commercial art, designing posters, advertisements, book illustrations, and decorative panels. This color lithograph is stamped on the lower right with the blind embossing designed by Jules Cheret for Les Maitres de l'Affiche, a prestigious publication that featured works by leading poster artists of the late 19th century. Artist: Alphonse Mucha (Czech-French, 1860-1939) Issued: 1899 Dimensions: 19.75"L x 23.50"H Country of Origin: Czechoslovakia/France

Mucha, Folio - 3 Design or Décor Lithographs

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

This stunning and rare lithograph is from Alphonse Mucha's Documents décoratifs. The work was published in Paris by Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts in 1902 and edited by Emile Levy. The work was an excellent representation of his work in the art nouveau movement. It included images of flowers, fauna, women, jewelry, kerosene lamps, cutlery, posters, furniture, and illustrations for books. Mucha "illustrates the process of stylisation and simplification that transforms a drawing from nature to an object for practical use [...] The compatibility of design and material is emphasized in applications of an identical motif on tableware, lace or jewelry. Examples for graphic artists include studies of nude or draped figures and of heads. Mucha's drawings and applied designs show virtuosity that surpasses technical ability. The publication was considered an invaluable textbook for artisans and designers and was used by art students in France and abroad, including Russia." (V. Arwas et al. Alphonse Mucha The Spirit of Art Nouveau (Alexandria, VA: 1998), p.310) Alphonse (Alfons) Maria Mucha (1860-1939) was a Bohemian and Czech artist. Alphonse Mucha's La Pater with Numerous Highly Decorated Pages

    Est: $25,000 - $35,000

This wonderfully illustrated volume is Alphonse Mucha's Le Pater. The work was published in Paris by Champenois et Piazza et Cie in 1899. The work was limited in publication to 510 copies of which this is number 57. Mucha felt that this work was his finest achievement as an illustrator and it was first religious illustrations. The work is bound in full skin with midnight blue binding. The work is printed on Japan in color on special paper in the shape of the manufactures of the Marais. There is also a suite in black on China. It was said of this work: “At this auspicious time, the turn of a century, Mucha wanted to deliver to future generations his reflections upon human life and man’s place in the universe. He wished to present the way that leads man to a gradual ascent to the divine ideal. He determined to fulfill these goals in his own version of the Lord’s Prayer.” (Mucha/Art Nouveau, p. 233) The work contained a page that stated the Lord's prayer, a page of Mucha's interpretation of the verses, and his own philosphical response. Mucha illustrated each line of the Lord's prayer using his designs (moon, eight pointed stars) and inspirations from Kabbalah and Masonic philosophy. Mucha represented God as a mysterious shadow representing him as everywhere but invisible. The illustration of the Woman is to represent love, which descends from Heaven. There are three complete suites of plates, 1 on Japan paper, 1 on special paper à la form of the Marais, and 1 on China paper. There is the portfolio cover front (illustrated) and back (blank) bound in. To the beginning of the work there are two title cards (no image), two no. 57 stamp pages (small circle), three dedication pages (no image). At the end there are three pages explaining the plates and paper type (decorative border), three pages of the publication imprint (small design), and one page with a decorative stamp illustration reading pense et lis. Often the first page presented will have only the design and no printed text for these extra pages. There are three of each fully illustrated image or prayer page. Twenty-three pages in triplicate (or 69 individual pages), with the first of these pages consistently in black and white. Seven of these are the full black and white illustrations. Sixteen are ornately illustrated prayer pages.
