Alfons Mucha was born in Czechoslovakia in 1860, and studied art in Paris and Munich. Alfons Mucha's drawings were often his own perceptions of the ideal female form. His poster Gismonda, made for actress Sarah Bernhardt's play of the same name, used subtle pastel colors and lighting that accented the crown of her head. Alfons Mucha's drawings also focused on the hair, eyes, and lips of the women portrayed. Mucha continued this revolutionary technique throughout his career, creating theater posters, advertising materials, and magazine covers. A series of Alfons Mucha's paintings of Czech and other Slavic people, entitled Slav Epic, was restored after WWII and placed in the permanent collection at Moravsky Krumlov's castle.                     Alphonse Mucha,  Czech 1860-1939-  Sketch of a seated woman in classical dress;  black and coloured pencil on paper, signed 'Mucha' and indistinctly dated '34[?]' (lower right), 43.2 x 32.1 cm.  Provenance:  By repute, purchased in the Czech Republic in the 1990s.  thence by descent.  Note:  This work is accompanied by a scanned letter written by Jana Brabcová-Orlíková, dated 31 July 1996, confirming the drawing's authenticity.  Mucha was a pioneering illustrator and graphic artist of the Art Nouveau movement in Central Europe, best remembered for his elaborate illustrations often depicting female and allegorical subjects. Alongside his colourful graphic works he also produced a number of contemplative drawings of female nudes, like the present lot, typically executed using delicate pencil lines which impart his studies with a great sensitivity. It is possible that the drawing presented here, which features the arched design typical of many of Mucha's drawings, represents a sketch or design for a more elaborate illustration. Other, similar examples were recently sold at Arthouse Hejtmanek, Prague, on 7 December 2023 (lot 126, £16,719), and at Poster Auctions International, New York, on 18 July 2023 (lot 366, $38,000). A further delicate pencil study of a female nude is held in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London [E.129-1964].

                    This wonderfully illustrated volume is Alphonse Mucha's Le Pater. The work was published in Paris by Champenois et Piazza et Cie in 1899. The work was limited in publication to 510 copies of which this is number 57. Mucha felt that this work was his finest achievement as an illustrator and it was first religious illustrations. The work is bound in full skin with midnight blue binding. The work is printed on Japan in color on special paper in the shape of the manufactures of the Marais. There is also a suite in black on China. It was said of this work: “At this auspicious time, the turn of a century, Mucha wanted to deliver to future generations his reflections upon human life and man’s place in the universe. He wished to present the way that leads man to a gradual ascent to the divine ideal. He determined to fulfill these goals in his own version of the Lord’s Prayer.” (Mucha/Art Nouveau, p. 233) The work contained a page that stated the Lord's prayer, a page of Mucha's interpretation of the verses, and his own philosphical response. Mucha illustrated each line of the Lord's prayer using his designs (moon, eight pointed stars) and inspirations from Kabbalah and Masonic philosophy. Mucha represented God as a mysterious shadow representing him as everywhere but invisible. The illustration of the Woman is to represent love, which descends from Heaven.

                    Alphonse Mucha Slavia c. 1935 15.5 h x 9.625 w in (39 x 24 cm) Reissuing Mucha's 1907 design in cool sepia tones, this is an official four-page life insurance document (here, in the name of Mr. Pan Otakar Petrecek). The woman in the image is Slavia, the personification of the Slavic people of Eastern Europe, much in the way Uncle Sam is to the United States. She "holds a ring in her hand which symbolizes unity... and there are two stylized peace doves on the arm rests of the hidden throne she is sitting on; but just in case, she also has a sword in her lap, the message being that the Slav is peaceful by nature but will fight when attacked" (Rennert/Weill, p. 322). The borders are decorated in identical patterns, but the amber hues of the lines are changed slightly from panel to panel, and the crisscross areas at the top have different floral panels. Each girl appears in an outdoor setting, with slender trees or tall flowers emphasizing her slim figure. The segment of the day they represent appears in the margin below the picture. The borders are worked out in such an exquisite pattern that each picture appears to be mounted in an elaborate frame of its own, or else seen through a decorated window. Quite possibly Mucha's whole concept for the series was that of gothic stained-glass windows" (Rennert/Weill, p. 232). But he was about to be exhibited alongside the stars of French fin-de-siecle lithography—Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Steinlen, and Grasset—in the Salon des Cent (the Salon of the One Hundred), a new series of exhibitions hosted by the literary magazine La Plume, which championed the art of lithography. "Mucha's ambition was to become a member of this group," wrote Victor Arwas. The artist succeeded by attracting the attention of the gallery's owner, Deschamps. "Deschamps visited Mucha in his studio while he was designing the poster. Fascinated by what he saw, he persuaded Mucha to print it… Mucha agreed, and the publisher's feeling, that this lightly outlined, impressive poster would make Mucha famous, proved to be correct" (Mucha/Art Nouveau, p. 156).                     Alphonse Mucha Lorenzaccio 1896 82.25 h x 29.75 w in (209 x 76 cm) Sarah Bernhardt adopts the pose of a pensive Lorenzo the Magnificent (1449-1492), the most powerful of the Medicis, in this play by Alfred de Musset. In the drama, Lorenzaccio struggles to save Florence, which had grown rich during his reign, from the grip of a power-hungry conqueror. Mucha represents this tyranny by a dragon menacing the city coat of arms (top left); Lorenzo has closed the book he was reading to ponder his course of action. Bernhardt adapted this 1863 play for herself, and the new version, represented by this poster, opened December 3, 1896. "Never afraid to tackle a male role, Bernhardt made Lorenzaccio into one of the classic roles of her repertoire" (Lendl/Paris, p. 18). Here, he is barely showing a piece of the bicycle... but as to the pleasure of riding, this sylph has it all over any dreary mechanical details. Airily she caresses the machine, her windblown hair embodying motion and a restless spirit, a vision of idle loveliness and a perfect Mucha maiden. Her gaze at us is straight and direct, not flirtatious but inviting and challenging, daring us to take her on in a race... Mucha finally had a perfect subject that justified hair in motion, and he took full advantage of it, giving her the most dizzying configurations of his famous 'macaroni' [hair]. The Perfecta was an English brand bicycle, which makes this one of the very few Mucha posters for an English client. It was also sold in France" (Rennert/Weill, p. 294). This is the larger format. And Mucha's personification of that fleshy blossom stands on its own, "proud and closed in her strictly formal pose" (Mucha/Art Nouveau, p. 196). But lest we judge this constrained beauty too harshly, let's not forget that the rose, of all the avidly sought blooms, is the only one equipped with thorns to protect her from the uninvited.                     Alphonse Mucha Ivy 1901 sight: 15.25 h x 15.25 w in (39 x 39 cm) Part of a decorative panel set, Ivy was created to correspond with Laurel (see PAI-XLIII, 453). "Reminiscent in concept to the Byzantine Heads, this is a coupling of two girls' profiles in cameos. Since they both represent leafy garden plants they are framed in pale green... rich foliage. The backgrounds behind the girls in their respective cameos feature mosaic patterns. The decorative use of foliage of this sort was characteristic of many of the designs which appeared in Mucha's 'Documents Decoratifs' portfolio" (Rennert/Weill, p. 280). "It is possible that Mucha was inspired by the dancer Lygie for the panel Ivy. This is indicated in the similarity... with the poster, also produced in 1901, advertising her performance in Tableaux Vivants (Living Pictures), which was based on the themes of Mucha's decorative works" (Mucha/Art Nouveau, p. 203).
