With corrosive humor and critical spirit, Fikret Muallà portrays in this drawing Joseph Stalin, Soviet socialist leader, (an icon of the red army can be seen which is a star on the bodyguard's hat), with his big mustache and with a cape held by two bodyguards, who camouflages himself before the people like a conjurer. Scrolls of paper with the title "Capitalist Deviation" (in French), surround the character, before whom a long-nosed individual prostrates himself. The work reflects the corruption of power and financial institutions of the time and place where he lived, in the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The exaggerated proportions and theatrical interactions between the characters enhance the visual impact of the message. Each element of the drawing invites the viewer to reflect on the dynamics of power, usury and oligarchies. Fikret Muallâ was a 20th century avant-garde painter of Turkish descent. Then he went to Paris, the capital of the arts and the center of unlimited freedom for him. However, he was forced to return home when he received no more money from his father. In Istanbul, after a three-day stay in the Bak?rköy psychiatric hospital, his mental health was considered normal. Fikret Mualla was appointed as a drawing teacher at a high school in Ayval?k. However, he left this post and moved to Beyo?lu, a suburb of Istanbul. For a time, he devoted himself to writing and drawing. He became friends with the soprano Semiha Berksoy, the writer Naz?m Hikmet and the painter Abidin Dino. His first exhibition, in 1934, with drawings, watercolors and designs, did not obtain great repercussion. In 1936, he was hospitalized again for about a year. After being discharged, he decided to leave Turkey, where he felt he was not understood. Before leaving for Paris in 1939, he painted about thirty oil paintings for the Turkish pavilion at the New York World's Fair, commissioned by his close friend Abidin Dino. His life in Paris passed between alcohol dependence, mental alienation and cognitive dissonance. He fell in love with the Turkish painter Hale Asaf without being reciprocated. He is hospitalized again for two months, but during this time he does not stop painting. The French model Dina Vierny saved him from deportation. In 1954, Sayg? opened his first exhibition in Paris. He became friends with many renowned artists, including Pablo Picasso. He later sold a signed photo of Picasso for a bottle of wine. After his second exhibition, he was hospitalized again. During this time, a collector, Madame Angles, took him under her patronage. This allowed him to make a living by painting and selling his works. However, battered, Fikret Mualla became paralyzed in 1962. He moved to Reillanne, a village in southeastern France, when his cirrhosis worsened. In May 1967, he was admitted to a clinic after his nervous disorders worsened. On the morning of July 20, he was found dead in his bed. In accordance with his wishes, his remains were taken to Turkey and buried in the Karacaahmet Cemetery in Istanbul. Muallà is considered one of the representatives of the Turkish arts of the 20th century, along with Abidin Dino.

In this female nude, Fikret Muallâ shows his ability to capture the emotionality and humanity of his figures through simple but expressive lines. The leaning of the elbow on the wall and the interplay between the body of a middle-aged woman and the surroundings suggest an enclosed, intimate and even suffocating space. FIKRET MUALLA SAYGI (TURKISH 1903-1967) Rue animeé circa 1960 gouache on paper 52 x 64 cm (20 1/2 x 25 3/16), framed dimensions: 77 x 87 cm (30 5/16 x 34 1/4) signed lower left EXPERTISE Comes with a certificate of authenticity by Marc Ottavi, Paris France LOT NOTES Fikret Mualla Saygı (1903-1967) was a prominent Turkish avant-garde painter known for his distinct and expressive style, bold brush strokes and vibrant colors. Born in Istanbul, Saygi spent a significant amount of his life in Paris, depicting vibrant Paris street scenes, social life, cafes and public spaces. Rue anemeé (a Vibrant Street), is a great example of Mualla Saygi’'s expressive color pallet and figurative style, effected by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism but preserving a distinctive Turkish identity. In 1939 Saygi made thirty works for the Turkish pavilion at the New York World's Fair. However, hist first exhibition opened only years later in Paris in 1954. Struggling at first to gain recognition and facing impactful personal challenges and struggles throughout his life, Saygi later became to be one of the most influential representatives of modern Turkish art of the 20th century, along with Abidin Dino. CONDITION Observed in frame under glass, the painting is in good condition, a 2.5 inch repaired tear along the right edge. No other visible issues to report. N.B.
