      Dec. 15, 2021

A PAIR OF AMERICAN MARBLE BUSTS C. 1850

      Est: $1,200 - $1,800

A PAIR OF AMERICAN MARBLE BUSTS C. 1850. Comprising a pair of finely carved life-sized marble busts presumably of a husband and wife by American sculpture Joseph Mozier (American 1812-1870). Both realistically carved in full round of good proportions and anatomy, with realistically modeled features, and deep folds. The man signed and dated on verso "J. MOZIER SR. FLORENCE 1850". Height 23.5 inches. The woman signed and dated on verso "J. MOZIER ROME 1856". Height 22 inches. A successful merchant in New York City, Joseph Mozier gave that up to become a sculptor and then spent most of his career in Rome where he first traveled in 1845. His work is mostly idealized or romantic, and is based on classical, biblical, and literary themes. His most famous work is "Undine" for which he won a grand prize in Rome in 1867 and according to Matthew Baigell "is a good example of the controlled eroticism seen in many mid-century pieces." The work is now at Dayton University in Ohio. SHIPPING NOTICE: Jackson's is your sole and only source for one stop packing and shipping.
