Stanley Mouse Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1940 -

The son of a Disney animator, artist Stanley Mouse is the renowned artist of rock music posters and campy T-shirts. He developed his craft during his childhood in Detroit, while also using the “Mouse” signature, instead of his Miller surname. Forgoing college graduation for San Francisco, he then dove into the 1960s psychedelic art scene, creating what he called “weirdo art,” which are some of the most collectible Stanley Mouse paintings. Often collaborating with the late Alton Kelley, together they produced iconic works, including the Grateful Dead's skeleton and rose, Ice Cream Kid/Rainbow Food, and Truckin' images, Journey's Captured and Escape album covers, and the ZigZag Man lithograph, and you'll find many of these sought-after Stanley Mouse paintings and prints for sale at Invaluable.

Sleek, curvy Art Nouveau lettering typically defines Stanley Mouse art, and you can find these and other vintage posters for sale at auction, with illustrations ranging from the vivid Cosmic Car Show, to the subtle Peace Pooh-Joan Baez. In addition to international museum showcases and psychedelic Stanley Mouse art for sale at auctioneers like Bonham's of London, he's also known for his cartoonish monsters and subdued oil paintings.

A limited edition Stanley Mouse lithograph entitled "Cosmic Car Show," named for an event at Muir Beach in Marin County, California, just across the Golden Gate Bridge, in which artists painted cars in a signature psychedelic style and the resulting automotive art was judged by artists including Stanley Mouse. Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: STANLEY MOUSE (1940- ) & ALTON KELLEY (1940-2008) SIZE: 14 x 20 in./35.6 x 50.6 cm PRINTER: The Bindweed Press, San Francisco DESCRIPTION: This rare concert poster for the Grateful Dead has become iconic and emblematic of the group’s 1960s effect on rock ‘n’ roll. In 1966, Mouse took over from Wes Wilson at Family Dog. “He was responsible—alone or in collaboration with associate Alton Kelley—for twenty-six of the next thirty-six Family Dog posters during a nine month period that firmly established the ‘psychedelic’ style as an expression of the times... His weapon of choice was the airbrush, with which he produced hot-rod-era cartoons that brought him early grassroots fame” (Art of Rock, p. 74). As for the imagery, Mouse and Kelley adapted a black and white drawing of a skeleton by Edmund Joseph Sullivan which illustrated one of the quatrains of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Cosmic Car Show Poster Signed by Stanley Mouse

            Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Stanley Mouse (born Stanley George Miller - American, b. 1940). "Cosmic Car Show" limited edition lithograph, 1967, numbered & hand signed in pencil below. Edition 174/350. An original lithograph on paper, numbered and hand signed by Stanley Mouse. The Cosmic Car Show was an art event featuring bands at Muir Beach, just across the Golden Gate Bridge. Artists painted cars in a signature psychedelic style and the resulting automotive art was judged by artists like including Stanley Mouse. Mouse is beloved for his rock concert poster designs for bands such as the Grateful Dead, and his cover art for Steve Miller's album "Book of Dreams" won a Grammy Award in 1977. Size: image - 26" W x 34.5" H (66 cm x 87.6 cm); 30" W x 39" H (76.2 cm x 99.1 cm) with border Stanley Mouse's initial splash in the art world occurred when he was expelled from high school for creating graffiti. He later attended the Society for Arts and Crafts, and soon became seduced by airbrushing and hot rod culture - painting T-shirts, cars, and bikes. Later, Mouse became entrenched with psychedelic art in San Francisco. Inspired by Art Nouveau designs, Mouse and his colleagues began producing psychedelic concert posters for concert promoter Bill Graham - for bands such as the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Beatles, and Journey. Mouse and Alton Kelley for example created the Dead's world famous Skeleton and Roses theme, and Mouse's cover art for Steve Miller's album "Book of Dreams" won a Grammy Award in 1977.
