Artist M. Mouly was born in Paris in 1918 and briefly joined the army during World War II, before being arrested as a spy in 1942 and imprisoned for several months. During his time in jail, he decided to become an artist upon his release. Once free, he began painting and also creating small ceramic figurines, which he sold to local stores under the name Moustache. Influenced by Pablo Picasso among others, Mouly’s paintings are often abstract portraits and landscapes.

In the 1950s, he began working in the print medium of lithography, mastering the technique so that Marcel Mouly’s lithographs rivaled his paintings, becoming sought after as art pieces themselves.
