Marcus Mote (Ohio, Indiana, 1817 - 1898) and A. McConaha (wife of Simon McConaha), The Residence of Nimrod Ferguson Built in 1818, 1889, oil on canvas. Signed "Wife of Simon McConaha" and titled lower. Signed, titled, and dated verso. Aslo: "Near Beeson's Station, Wayne County, Indiana." Biography from Richmond Art Museum:An early advocate of arts education, Marcus Mote was born to Quakers David and Miriam Mendenhall Mote in 1817 near Lebanon, Ohio. His career began early as an itinerant limner, famous by drawing a life sketch of John Quincy Adams when Adams was in route to Cincinnati to dedicate the Mount Adams Observatory and made a stop at the Williamson Hotel, which is now known as the Golden Lamb Inn. Mote moved his family to Richmond in 1864 in search of a broader audience of patrons. He opened a studio and continued to paint portraits, sign painting, biblical paintings and tuition from students. It was in 1869 that he founded the Richmond Academy of Design for Women. It is reported that 541 pupils attended the academy. It was his advocacy of art as part of the school curriculum that is his true legacy. He managed to convince the Richmond School system to include drawing in school eight years before the State of Indiana mandated drawing as part of the school curriculum. This legacy helped to prepare the ground for Richmond's early reputation as an art center. Submitted by Shaun Dingwerth Executive Director Richmond Art Museum

    • MARCUS MOTE OIL ON BOARD AFTER SAMUEL WALLER
      Mar. 29, 2015

MARCUS MOTE OIL ON BOARD AFTER SAMUEL WALLER

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

A remarkable oil on board by American artist, Marcus Mote (1817 - 1898, America) after an 1877 oil painting by Samuel Edmund Waller (1850 - 1903, United Kingdom) titled, "Home? There Was No Sign of Home from Parapet to Basement." The Waller painting illustrates a scene from the Thomas Hood poem, "Haunted House." The oil on board is highly detailed and while it is highly unlikely that Mote ever encountered the original oil on board, he reproduces the colors of the original faithfully, deviating only in touches of red upon the overcoat and some of the details upon the building. Upon close inspection, this oil on board is painted over an almost imperceptible steel engraving of Waller's painting which has been mounted to the board. Signed on the face, "Marcus Mote after S.E. Waller 1885 Haunted House," and on verso, "Haunted House after S. E. Waller Painted by Marcus Mote 1885." Panel measures 15"h x 22.375"w (38.1cm x 56.83cm). The original painting by Waller sold in 2005 with Bonham's for $16,450. Marcus Mote was born in Ohio and became an artist in spite of his Quaker upbringing. He was known for his portraits but also painted religious themes, Mote also opened the Richmond Academy of Design, in Indiana and also painted coaches, designed election posters and newspaper advertisements eventually expanding into Daguerreotypes and Ambrotypes photography. His work can be found in the permanent collections of: Earlham College, Indiana. Wayne County Museum, Indiana, Richmond Art Museum, Indiana and the Ohio Historical Society.

    • PORTRAIT OF THE MATHER FARM ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS MOTE (OHIO/INDIANA, 1817-1898).
      Nov. 28, 2014

PORTRAIT OF THE MATHER FARM ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS MOTE (OHIO/INDIANA, 1817-1898).

      Est: $5,000 - $7,000

PORTRAIT OF THE MATHER FARM ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS MOTE (OHIO/INDIANA, 1817-1898). Oil on canvas, unsigned. Depiction of the Mather Farm, along the Little Miami River, near Lebanon, Ohio, with members of the family standing in the foreground. 30"h. 40"w., in its original frame, 42"h. 51"w. This view is nearly identical to a signed landscape by Mote sold at Garth's in May 2008 (lot 190). That landscape was signed by Mote and dated May 7, 1881, and noted that it was after an 1871 sketch by Lillie Mather. The Mather family sold their farm in 1871, and it is likely that Lillie made her sketch just prior to departing the farm, and then the family commissioned that portrait ten years later. The present portrait has descended in the Mather family, likely originating in the household of David Mather (the family member who sold the farm in 1871), to his daughter, Louise (Lillie's cousin), and thence by descent to the present owner. Clearly, the family homeplace was of great sentimental significance to the entire Mather family, as two branches of the family elected to memorialize the farm after they left it in 1871.
