      • JAMES HENRY MOSER ORIGINAL ARTWORK.
        May. 13, 2009

        JAMES HENRY MOSER ORIGINAL ARTWORK.

        Est: $400 - $600

JAMES HENRY MOSER ORIGINAL ARTWORK. JAMES HENRY MOSER (1854-1913) American artist and illustrator for the Washington Times together with the Post, and Herald. Moser was also known for his work with watercolors. A pair of original pieces by the noted watercolorist, each 7 x 4 1/2" and matted together in a simple period gilt frame. The first illustration, executed in ink and muted watercolors and signed "JH MOSER DEL '98" appears to have been accomplished for the Washington, D.C. branch of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. The illustration consists of a group of vignettes including a scene of two Union soldiers in battle encapsulated in a lens over scenes of a soldier on guard and a pair of Union soldiers being greeted what appears to be recently emancipated slaves. The second illustration honors emancipation and is signed "JHM-DEL". In addition to the watercolor and ink illustration, Moser has added an albumen of the Capitol together with a cut-out magazine illustration of the Lincoln Emancipation statue, both deftly incorporated into the painting. A very unusual set of images. The period mat bears an inscription at lower left: "To Major W. P. Huxford compliments D. W. Gregory '98." William Pitkin Huxford was a veteran of the Civil War who saw action at Port Hudson (for which he earned a brevet as Major in 1867), Malvern Hill and New Market (where he was captured). Light toning to mat, a few scuffs and chips to frame, otherwise the artwork appears to be in very fine condition.
