      • Domenico Mortellito '40s Lacquer Linoleum Credenza
        Feb. 09, 2014

Domenico Mortellito '40s Lacquer Linoleum Credenza

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

A circa-1940 Domenico Mortellito (Italian-American, 1906-1994) carved lacquered linoleum "Zodiac" credenza decorated with seven signs of the Zodiac. The classic Art Deco credenza in "as found" good condition, has a 1/2" piece missing from the top and a pencil-eraser size hole in the linoleum. It also has the same crazing as does the table/bench. The two-door body of the piece is made from laminated wood and covered with a coarse canvas which is painted white. It measures 26 1/2" high, 13 3/4" deep and 60" long deep. His art career began when he was able to graduate a year early from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts in 1922 and enter Pratt Institute, graduating with a historic award in 1926. He operated his own studio in New York City from 1927 to 1942, during which time he participated in the W.P.A. and T.R.A.P. public programs. The work he produced included murals for World's Fair pavilions, churches, luxury liner ships and trains, architectural decorations for public buildings, sculpture, and furniture. From 1942 to 1945, Mortellito worked in the Pentagon, both as a civilian and as a lieutenant in the Air Force. He designed exhibits, supervised graphic presentations, and designed booklets and brochures. From 1945 to 1979, he worked as a design advisor for the DuPont Company designing exhibits and the 1965 World's Fair Pavilion. He designed marketing materials and product symbols, and supervised the design department. As the chairman of the DuPont Color Council, Mortellito developed innovative printing processes. As an artist, he experimented with a wide range of potential art materials. The hand made artist credenza is from the estate of fashion photographer Gene Fenn (1911-2001). Gene, a personal friend of Domenico's, photographed Mortellito's decorative screens and furniture for his catalog. He also photographed Domenico at work for the December 1937 magazine article of "Art Instruction Magazine". Gene studied photography and painting at Cooper Union in New York and in 1930 assisted Louise Dahl-Wolfe, a rising fashion photographer for "Harper's Bazaar." In 1949, he went to Paris and studied painting under Fernand Leger and Andre Lhote and became part of the artistic milieu of the era. He knew Marcel Duchamp in New York, and in France he met Braque, Chagall, Leger, Miro, Picasso, Van Dongen and Zadkine, whom he photographed. He also came to know Man Ray in whose studio he compiled an unpublished documentary.
