Lithographic frontispiece and 17 folding lithographic plates. Modern cloth, original front wrapper bound in. Wrapper soiled, chipped and laid down, minor browning. FIRST EDITION. Born in Maine, Edward Morse was a zoologist who went to Japan to study brachiopod shells in 1877. There he discovered shell mounds in the Shinegawa ward of Tokyo, and began an excavation of them — the first scientific excavations conducted in Japan, and the beginning of Japanese Archaeology.
