[CHINA] [MORRISON], HEDDA HAMMER (1908-1991). Peiping People Taken by Hedda Hammer. 20 Photographs, after 1933 and before 1941.

      Est: $800 - $1,200

[CHINA] [MORRISON], HEDDA HAMMER (1908-1991). Peiping People Taken by Hedda Hammer. 20 Photographs, after 1933 and before 1941. Group of 20 gelatin silver prints housed in a brown paper envelope, hand-lettered in fine calligraphy as above (likely by Hedda Hammer herself). 4 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches (113 x 90 mm) or the reverse, stamped verso "Copyright Hedda Hammer Peking" (Hedda Hammer married Alastair Morrison in 1941). Some irregular toning to the images, likely a developer flaw. This is a rare and very appealing series of scenes of Peking street life, likely published in this form at Hartung's, managed, a German-owned commercial photographic studio and shop in the Legation Quarter that was managed by Hedwig Hammer. Sold with a group of five small sleeves of hand-colored gelatin silver prints done at The Peiping Art Photo Studio (series of the Summer Palace, the Western Hills, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall and the Confucian Temple) about 50 images in all; and an envelope of twelve small gelatin silver prints on printed card mounts with title in German, likely also by Morrison but not identified as to studio. In all, an interesting collection of Peking photography of the 1930s. C
