ROBERT MORRIS, A FINAL TOMB FOR FRANK 'JELLY' NASH, SCREENPRINT

            Est: $600 - $900

Artist: Robert Morris, American (1931 - 2018) Title: A Final Tomb For Frank 'Jelly' Nash Year: 1980 Medium: Screenprint, signed and numbered in pencil Edition: 180 Size: 26 in. x 32 in. (66.04 cm x 81.28 cm) Printer: Styria Studios, NYC Reference: Fig. 42 in "Robert Morris: Estampes et Multiples 1952-1998, Catalogue Raisonne" by Christophe Cherix, Geneve et Chatou 1999. Description: This Robert Morris print explores the relationship of text to art by discussing the death of Frank "Jelly" Nash and the artist's rendering of a supposed burial and memorial for the legendary bank robber Frank Nash. Text reads - A 1933 Chevrolet and a 1932 Dodge sedan are found and fully restored. They are placed in the parking lot of the Kansas City, Missouri, Union Station in precisely the places they occupied the morning of June 17, 1933 (with the help of UPI photographs and old police records this can be determined). Frank "Jelly" Nash's body --whereever it now is-- is disinterred and buried beneath the 1933 Chevrolet. Mr. Nash, who had reputedly robbed with the Barkers, was being transferred from a train, the Missouri Pacific Flyer, to the Chevrolet, for transport to Leavenworth Penitentiary, when he was machine-gunned to death by unknown assailants. Also killed in or around the two cars in what was to become known as the "Kansas City Massacre" were FBI agent Raymond Caffrey, police chief Otto Reed, detectives W.J. "Red" Grooms and Frank Hermanson. Plaster casts of still existing groups of bullet holes in the station walls can be made and sold inside the station, together with a pamphlet describing the event.

            Est: $3,000 - $5,000

MORRIS, Robert (American, 1931-2018). Untitled (From the Firestorms Series). 1982. Signed and dated lower right in margin. Charcoal, ink, graphite and airbrushed pigment on stiff paper laid to linen. Three contiguous vertical panels. 76 x 150”. Each single panel is 76 x 50”. Robert Morris was an American sculptor, conceptual artist and writer. He was regarded as having been one of the most prominent theorists of Minimalism along with Donald Judd, but also made important contributions to the development of performance art, land art, the Process Art movement, and installation art. During the later 1970s, Morris switched to figurative work, a move that surprised many of his supporters. Themes of the work were often fear of nuclear war. Firestorms is part of that body of work. “Inside the volume of two handfuls a gas with the density of meal expands faster than any known thing in the Universe. Giving up its binding force of energy a small chunk of dull gray metal rearranges itself into every nameable element. Time is drawn backwards into the void for an instant as matter is emptied into energy. Outside streetcar rails melt and roof tiles boil as the city shudders for an instant before bursting pressures and ensuing firestorms. Not all life is obliterated. A burnt and naked man stands on a black riverbank holding his eyeball in his palm unable to see the beauty the reversing the Universe held for some.” Previous from the placard describing another work from the series: MoMA Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY. Unusual patterns and textures inherent. Smudges in margins overall. Good condition. Third-party shipping required.

Text: The individual's favorite possessions-- the golf clubs, the shoes, the tie pin, the Ferrari, the bowling ball, the art collection, etc. --are carefully sawed in halves. The edges of the cuts are filed or otherwise cleaned to reveal precise cross-sections of the objects which are embedded in a transparent plastic matrix. The objects are arranged so that the cross-sections face upward. The matirx forms a vast circular floor and a top layer of smooth, indestructible, transparent plastic is poured as a finish surface. A large building is erected over this floor, a building held up with a maze ofelaborate wooden trusses. No pole or column interrupts the floor. The appropriate decor and sound system are installed. A suitable name is found. A discrete advertising campaign is initiated. Only the highest quality roller skates are allowed on the floor.

            Est: €7,000 - €10,000

MORRIS ROBERT (n. 1931). MIRROR (F-2 COPY M), 1967 . on the case: Castelli/ Sonnabend label, Tapes & films, New York PROVENANCE Private collection, Massa The artist, known mainly as a sculptor, is among the protagonists of the American and European artistic panorama of the second half of the twentieth century. THE His works are an intertwining of different contemporary disciplines and theoretical reflections on minimalism art, process art and the anti-form. Morris studies the relationship between space, object and observer by installing geometric solids to create cold and silent environments. Morris's attention is also focused on physical, chromatic, tactile, plastic and luminous specificities of the different materials he uses such as: wood, metal and glass. The intent is to always offer the viewer new perceptive possibilities. Starting from the 1960s, Morris experimented with the film medium, so as to trace elements of continuity of a deeply analytical and articulated path. Light becomes the protagonist: objects capable of capturing it and emanating it are a preamble to the reflex action of the mirror that captures the passage of someone body in space and time. Morris arranges the mirrors in such a way as to create ‒ reflection effect ‒ fictitious spaces within an environment. The artist defined them as “fraudulent spaces”. The work we are presenting at auction, entitled Mirror, is a 9-minute short film shot in black and white without sound, where the artist explores the deceptive and changing space of reality through the use of a mirror which, held in the hands , reflects the surrounding snow environment. Subsequently, moving backwards from the camera, Morris is incorporated into nature, vanishing into it.. 18,50 x 18,50 cm.

(66.04 cm x 81.28 cm) Printer: Styria Studios, NYC Reference: Fig. 43 in "Robert Morris: Estampes et Multiples 1952-1998, Catalogue Raisonne" by Christophe Cherix, Geneve et Chatou 1999. Description: This print by Robert Morris explores the fictional death of an unknown public figure, focusing on the subsequent burial and memorial services.
