George Lovett Kingsland Morris Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1905 - d. 1975

(born 1905 New York, New York; died 1975 New York, New York) American painter. Considered a major advocate for American abstract art, George Lovett Kingsland Morris studied at Yale University in 1928 and then the Art Students League from 1928-30. He studied with the Realist artists John Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller, however he chose a different artistic path by creating abstract art. He went to Paris in 1929 and studied with Fernand Leger. From then on Morris explored Cubism and developed his own interpretation of it; even when the art world began favoring Abstract Expressionism. He believed that abstraction had limitless capabilities for expression, a view he often touted in his short lived art critique magazine The Miscellany. In 1937 Morris co-founded the American Abstract Artists, which advocated for museums and galleries to place the same emphasis on American abstract art as they do European abstract art. That same year he published another art magazine, Plastique, and edited for The Partisan Review from 1937 to 1943. He also held teaching positions at the Art Students League from 1943-44 and St. Johns College in Annapolis, MD from 1960-61. From 1947 on, Morris concentrated on creating art, during which time he finally started gaining recognition for his paintings. His work is featured in such museum collections as The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., The Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York City and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

George L.K. Morris American, (1905-1975) Untitled (Vortex) oil on canvas signed lower right. Provenance: From a private collector, Indianapolis. From the archives of AskArt: Though George Lovett Kingsland Morris studied with realist painters John Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League, the influence of their points of view was replaced by that of abstractionists Amedee Ozenfant and Fernand Leger. The paintings of Morris were two-dimensional, hard-edged and brightly colored. Born in New York City in 1905, Morris became a full-fledged abstractionist and a founder in 1936 of the American Abstract Artists. He edited "The World of Abstract Art, the group's publication, and was their president from 1948-1950. Morris had graduated from Yale in 1928 and studied at the League until 1930, when he went to Paris to attend the Academie Moderne. A sculptor, writer, art critic and teacher in addition to abstract painter Morris himself later taught at the Art Students League from 1943-1944, as well as St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, 1960-1961. Morris' intrinsic abstract bent was made even clearer by his positive feeling for Hans Arp's sculpture. He and Arp edited the French art magazine, "Plastique." Morris also edited the "Bulletin of the Museum of Modern Art" and "Partisan Review." He died in 1975 in New York City. George Lovett Kingsland Morris was widely exhibited. His work is represented in major museums: the Brooklyn Museum; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Phillips Collection and National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. GEORGE L. K. MORRIS (1905-1975) Composition #9.

        Est: $30,000 - $50,000

GEORGE L. K. MORRIS (1905-1975) Composition #9. Oil on canvas. 360x250 mm; 14 1/8x9 7/8 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto and signed, titled and dated in oil, verso. 1936. Published: Zabriskie Gallery, Zabriskie Fifty Years, 2004, page 86 (illustrated). Morris was born in New York into a prominent New York family. He attended Yale University and studied with John Sloan (1871-1951) and Kenneth Hayes Miller (1876-1952) at the Art Students League of New York in 1928-29. In 1929, he traveled to Paris where he studied with Fernand Léger (1881-1955) and Amédée Ozenfant (1866-1966) and devoted himself to abstract art. He practiced his own form of Cubism, which was steadfast throughout his career even as Expressionism became the preferred form of abstraction. He also advocated for the recognition of an American abstract art, relaunching the Partisan Review (of which he was an editor and contributed as a writer) and was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists, acting as its president in the 1940s.
