GIOVANNI BATTISTA MORONI (Bondio, near Albino, 1520/1524-1578). "Portrait of a gentleman". Oil on canvas. Relined 19th century. Presents Italian frame of the first half of the seventeenth century.

    Est: €250,000 - €300,000

GIOVANNI BATTISTA MORONI (Bondio, near Albino, 1520/1524-1578). "Portrait of a gentleman". Oil on canvas. Relined 19th century. Presents Italian frame of the first half of the seventeenth century. Measurements: 69.5 x 54 cm; 85.5 x 68 cm (frame). In this portrait, the gentleman appears dressed in a black dress of rich fabrics, suggesting his high social status. The position of the body, in profile, contrasts with the rotation of the head towards the viewer, generating a subtle tension that emphasizes the individuality and character of the subject. The light, carefully directed on his face, highlights the texture of the skin and the modeling of the features, while the dark background creates a strong contrast, allowing the figure to stand out with intensity. Moroni shows his mastery in the use of dark and medium tones to build the three-dimensionality of the sitter without losing naturalness. The treatment of the clothing is equally remarkable as Moroni pays special attention to the texture of the fabrics, with a range of blacks that hint at variations of materials, from velvet to wool. This portrait by Moroni follows the Venetian tradition in which the artist inscribed himself, characterized by psychological depth, mastery of color and meticulous observation of reality. Through a sober and elegant format, Moroni succeeds in capturing the essence of the portrayed gentleman, establishing a dialogue with similar works preserved in international museums. This work reflects Moroni's remarkable innate skills for portraiture, characterized by an exceptional ability to accurately represent reality. His style combines the Lombard-Venetian tradition with the influence of Nordic art. In this portraiture, Moroni focuses more on capturing the model's physical appearance and social position than on exploring his psychology. The identity of the sitter remains unknown. Moroni was admired throughout northern Italy for his ability to capture his models "from life," in the words of the Venetian artist Titian. Giovanni Battista Moroni was an Italian painter known primarily for his elegantly realistic portraits of the local nobility and clergy, and is considered one of the great portraitists of the Cinquecento. Moroni trained with Alessandro Bonvicino in Brescia, where he was the principal studio assistant during the 1540s, and worked in Trento, Bergamo and his hometown of Albino. His two brief periods in Trento coincided with the first two sessions of the Council of Trent, 1546-48 and 1551-53. On both occasions, Moroni painted several religious works, as well as the series of portraits for which he is remembered. During his stay in Trent he also came into contact with Titian and with Count-Bishop Cristoforo Madruzzo, whose portrait is by Titian, but for whom Moroni painted portraits of Madruzzo's sons. In the 19th century it was claimed that Titian had taught him in Trent; however, it is unlikely that he ventured to visit the Venetian's studio for very long. Moroni's period as a fashionable portraitist in Bergamo spans only the years 1557-62 or so, after which Bergamo was convulsed by internecine strife and Moroni retired permanently to Albino, where, in his provincial isolation, he went completely unnoticed by Giorgio Vasari. His production in Bergamo, influenced in part by Savoldo's studio, produced in a few years a long series of portraits. The subjects are not drawn exclusively from the Bergamo aristocracy, but from the new self-conscious class of exemplary scholars, professionals and government bureaucrats, with a few soldiers, presented in aloof and wary attitudes with Moroni's meticulous passages of still life and a closer attention to fabrics and clothing than to psychological penetration. His output of religious paintings was smaller and less successful than his portraits. It has an Italian frame from the first half of the 17th century.

    Est: €7,000 - €12,000

Esposizioni: Brescia Museo Diocesano, 2014, Pittori attorno a Moretto. Giovan Battista Moroni (Albino 1520 - 1579) Madonna and Child with Saints Bartholomew and Jerome Oil on panel 55,5 x 42 cm From the catalogue entries, written by Professor Giuseppe Fusari, quoted below: A small-scale copy of the canvas by Alessandro Bonvicino known as Moretto, also known by the title Madonna of the Pears, kept at the Pinacoteca Vaticana (inv. 359), it is an example of the reinterpretation made by what is probably Moretto's most illustrious pupil, through that personal chromatic sentiment that characterises his sacred artworks and which highlights the very personal way in which Bonvicino inspired the artist from Bergamo. Exhibitions: Brescia Museo Diocesano, 2014, Pittori intorno a Moretto. Publications: Catalogue of the Exhibition Pittori intorno a Moretto, Brescia 2014. Catalogue of the Exhibition Maria una donna diventa madre di Dio, Levico Terme, 2016.

    Portrait of a Gentleman

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Oil on panel 96x75 cm. Framed The painting bears a wax stamp on the back: "GALERIE SEDELMEYER PARIS". This painting is an example of the accurate realism and absence of rhetorical artifice that characterised Lombard portrait painting in the late 16th Century, following the example of Giovan Battista Moroni. From that high model we find here, in addition to the lenticular analyticity of the pictorial rendering, the measured tone, the concentrated composition, the subtly melancholic character: qualities that, mutatis mutandis, descend from such superb Moronian achievements as the Portrait of Don Gabriel de la Cueva y Giron in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, the Portrait of Giovan Pietro Maffei in the Kunsthistoriscehs Museum, Vienna, and the Portrait of a Knight in the Isabella Gardner Stewart Museum, Budapest.

Giovan Battista Moroni (Albino 1520/1524 - 1578/1579) attributed Portrait of boy Oil on canvas 37,5 x 26,8 cm The artwork finds significant comparative examples with the portrayed in the artwork Crocifisso and Ss. John the Baptist and Sebastian and a donor (Bergamo, Church of Sant'Alessandro della Croce), or in the male portrait in a Couple of devotees in front of the Madonna and Child and Saint Michael (USA, Virgina Museum of Fine Art).

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

PORTRAIT EINES MANNES MIT BRIEF Öl auf Leinwand. 100 x 81 cm. Gekehlter, teilweise vergoldeter Holzrahmen. Jahrhunderts in Italien. Literatur: Vgl. F.R. Shapley, Complete Catalogue of the Samuel H. Portrait of a priest, bust-length oil on canvas 193/4 x 161/2 in. (50.2 x 41.9 cm.) PROVENANCE Moroni, Milan. Cora, Milan. with Harari & Johns, Ltd., London, 1986. NOTES Born at Albino, near Bergamo, the westernmost city of the Venetian terra firma, Moroni was strongly influenced by the Brescian Alessandro Bonvicino, il Moretto, with whom he worked in the late 1540s. While aware of wider developments - Lotto had worked for Bergamesque patrons to spectacular effect and there was a major altarpiece by Titian at Brescia - Moroni's consistency as a portraitist reflected his unquestioned dominance as the painter of a rich town with a powerful landowning and mercantile elite. Berenson termed Moroni the only mere portrait painter that Italy ever produced, and he was, indeed, the only major cinquecento painter who was first and foremost a portraitist, and whose enduring reputation is based almost exclusively on this achievement. To this extent, Berenson's implied analogy with Frans Hals, although not intended in a complimentary sense, is not misplaced. Partly because of its small dimensions, this previously unpublished Portrait of a priest stands as a fine example of the intimacy and directness of observation that distinguishes Moroni from his more courtly contemporaries and constitutes his contribution to the tradition of realism in Lombard painting that a generation later would inspire Caravaggio. As suggested by Prof. Mina Gregori (written communication, April 2002), the present lot is a late work by the artist. It can be compared to other small-scale late paintings by Moroni from the 1570s, such as the Portrait of a nobleman (sold, Christies, London, 7 July 2000, lot 85), as well full-lengths such as the celebrated Cavalier in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The treatment of the hair and flesh in the present lot closely parallels that in the Gardner canvas, a work dated 1576, and the Portrait of a Young Priest, an austere and somberly colored three-quarter length in the Pinacoteca dell'Accademia Carrarra, Bergamo, which is generally dated to the 1570s. We are grateful to Prof. Mina Gregori for for her assistance with this entry and for confirming the attribution of the present lot to Moroni.
