Henry MORLEY: Ship at Sea - Oil on Canvas

Oil on canvas depiction of a sailing ship at sea with crashing waves and birds above, in an ornate gilt frame. Signed lower left: H. Morley. Henry Morley was an influential Stirling artist. He was born in Nottingham in 1870 and trained in Paris before studying in Stirling with Joseph Denovan Adam the renowned painter of Highland Cattle. Henry Morley chose to live in the Stirling area and married the artist Isobel Miller Hutchinson, who was also the daughter of the local rector in 1901. In 1910 they moved into The Gables, St Ninians, an arts and craft house they had built, where they entertained well-known artist and designers such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The impact of Henry and his wife Isobel is still acknowledged with Morley Crescent in Stirling still being named after them. [Art: 10 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches; Frame: 20 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches]. Some noticeable imperfections to the canvas.

Harry Morley, ARA (1881-1943) Figures on a beach, low tide with the artist's studio stamp watercolour 23 cm by 28.5 cm; 9in by 11 1/4 in A winner of the prestigious Rome Scholarship in the mid 1920s, Morley's best work reflects the influence of Italian Art of the Renaissance with a characteristic British twentieth century twist. He was a keen painter of the sea throughout his life, executing many watercolours of scenes along the British coast in places such as the North Norfolk, Kent and Dorset.
