      HOZAN: IMMORTAL CHOKARO

      Okimono, ivory and inlays. Japan, late Meiji Period (1868 – 1912)Okimono sculpture depicting the immortal Chokaro, from the group of Taoist Eight Immortal Chinas, Baxian. In Japan a sennin, his characteristic is the double squash hyotan out of which he can charm his mule, which is exactly going on in this Okimono. The animal is jumping happily as he emerges while Chokaro tries to keep out of his way. The gourd is bound to a long forked stick. The fine thick clothing displays many colorful floral inlays. On back is typical leafy robe of the Sennin and his giant round hat. On finger replaced, this hand holds the closure of hyotan. Oval base plate, below is the signature HO-ZAN on red lacquer inlay.HEIGHT 32,4 CMFrom an old Rheinland private collection
