      A SCROLL PAINTING OF A RAKAN SITTING ON A SHISHI, AFTER KUSUMI MORIKAGE After Kusumi Morikage (1620-1690) Japan, 20th century Ink, watercolors, and gouache on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame with lacquer handles. Depicting a rakan seated in royal ease atop a blue shishi. Inscriptions: Signed ‘Morikage’ 守景 with seal. Image SIZE 81.5 x 39.5 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 162 x 54.5 cm Condition: Good condition with wear and soiling. Creasing, folds, and stains. The mounting with usual traces of wear and age. With a wood tomobako storage box. (2) Kusumi Morikage (1620-1690) was a Japanese painter of the Edo period. He came from Kaga Province, the center of the lands of the Maeda clan. He fell afoul of his teacher, Kano Tan'yu, and became the Maeda clan's official painter. His sympathy for farmers and the poor people of the Edo period is reflected in his works. His daughter, Kiyohara Yukinobu (1643–1682), was also an artist, one of the few female painters of the Edo period.
