Kappa-Zuri Japanese Woodprint 1973 Signature Yoshitoshi Mori '73 Number 9 of 50 Benkei and Ushiwakamaru on the Gojo-bridge Dimensions: 87 cm x 62 cm The Technique of the "KAPPA-ZURI" Stencil Prints It is impossible to separate Yoshitoshi Mori's stencil prints from his "Kappa-Zuri" technique. His style represents a near perfect fusion of the two. In producing his prints, Mr. Mori first produces a sketch. When the sketch is finished to his satisfaction, he then places it on the top of a brown paper stencil, which consists of several thin layers of feather-like paper, bound together with lacquer and moisture-proofed with tannin. (Kappa means binding feather together, and zuri means print). Mr. Mori then proceeds to cut away the stencil with a tiny, sharp knife until the sketch has been transferred onto the stencil. In adding color to the print, he protects the rice paper with a special paste, so tha the vegetable pigments are applied only where he wants them. On occasion he uses brushes to apply hal-tone colors. When the print is completed, the paste is washed off in the final stage.

Yoshitoshi Mori signed limited edition stencil mixed media hand embellished Print

          Est: $100 - $1,000

Yoshitoshi Mori signed and numbered limited edition stencil mixed media hand embellished print number Pencil signed number 1/30. Yoshitoshi Mori signed and numbered limited edition stencil mixed media print number 38/50. 1978 elegantly Kato framed. Initially, Mori trained in nihonga, a style of painting that emerged in Japan in the late 19th century as a reaction against the influence of Western art forms. It was during this early period of his artistic career that Mori cultivated an appreciation for traditional Japanese aesthetics and techniques, which would later inform his work in woodblock printing. In the mid-1950s, Mori began to experiment with stencil dying, and by the end of that decade, he had almost entirely shifted his artistic practice to kappazuri-e, a form of stencil print. In 1959, he was accepted into the Japan Print Association, which marked the beginning of his official recognition as a print artist. Mori's works are typically characterized by their bold, dynamic compositions, and their subjects often include traditional Japanese folk tales and kabuki scenes. These are rendered with a strong sense of color and a distinctive graphic style, often featuring a fluid, calligraphic line. Yoshitoshi Mori's works have been exhibited internationally and are included in numerous prestigious collections, including those of the British Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Despite his late start in printmaking, Mori achieved significant recognition and contributed a unique voice to 20th-century Japanese art. Considered to be one of Japan's finest and most innovative 20th century print makers, Mori has exhibited throughout the world and his works can be found in permanent collections of innumerable museums throughout the world including the Berlin National Museum, Metropolitan Museum, Fine Arts Museum Boston, Barcelona Arts Museum, British Museum, Japan Folk Art Museum , Brooklyn Museum, Yale University Gallery and others

Yoshitoshi Mori Artist Proof Stencil and mixed media print hand embellished 1982 Print Frame: 19" x 24.25" Visible 13" x 18" Initially, Mori trained in nihonga, a style of painting that emerged in Japan in the late 19th century as a reaction against the influence of Western art forms.
