Provenance: Arthur Roger Gallery, New Orleans, LA, 1989. Note: Elemore Morgan's beautiful and elegant landscape paintings seemingly defy gravity. With a wide-open sky and small area of land, the entire work offered here almost seems to float among the pink clouds depicted on a bright blue background. In the distance, a silhouette of trees anchors the scene and draws the eye to the horizon line, a typical feature in Morgan's compositions. Preferring distinctive, unusually shaped boards to canvases, Morgan painted en plein air and utilized a vivid palette to express the Louisiana landscape around him. Not only a brilliant painter, Morgan was also an educator, teaching at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), where he influenced generations of artists.

Provenance: Arthur Roger Gallery, New Orleans.. Note: Known as one of the south's premier landscape painters, Elemore Morgan Jr. often painted plein-air Louisiana landscapes. Formally educated at Louisiana State University and the Ruskin School of Fine Arts at Oxford University, Morgan enjoyed travel and painted scenes he observed from around the world. However, he always returned to Louisiana, where he appreciated the atmospheric effect of moisture in the air and how it diffused the sunlight. In the current lot, Morgan employed his characteristic broad brush strokes and gestural painting style to capture the standing water in a field under a clear, open sky.
