      JULES-LOUIS MORÉTEAU (French 1888-1956) Portrait of a Proud Provincial Fulani Chief- 1936 Oil on wood panel Signed upper right "JULES-LOUIS MORÉTEAU" and inscribed on verso "CHEF FOULAH, SUBDIVISION DE DALABA. FOUTA-DJALLON, GUINÉE FRANÇAISE, JULES-LOUIS MORÉTEAU, 1936" 18.1 inches x 14.6 inches (46 x 37 cm), unframed Moreteau exhibited at the Salon of French Artists beginning in 1922. In 1926, he received a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français, as well as the Prix du Maroc; and thus launching a new career as a painter-traveler in the French colonies. Between 1927 and 1931, he painted in Morocco. In 1935, after receiving the prize from the French West Africa (AOF), he stayed in Guinea and in Ivory Coast in 1936 and 1937.
