This oil painting on panel is signed "A. Moreau" lower right, as well as bearing an attributed plaque. It is likely an homage to Adrien Moreau (France, 1843 - 1906). It depicts lords and ladies waiting for the ferryman. The painting is housed in an ornate gilt frame. The painting has significant discoloration throughout, as well as a crack middle left, and a scratch to the man's teal cloak. The board measures 7 3/4" x 10 1/8", and the frame measures 13" x 15". CONTACT US SKU#: 118829 US Shipping $49 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Adrien Moreau was a French genre and historical painter, sculptor and illustrator.Moreau was born in Troyes in Aube department. He began his artistic training as an apprentice glassmaker, but left for Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Leon Cogniet and Isidore Pils. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1868, being described by fellow artist and critic, Joseph Uzanne, as "among the ranks of the greatest painters of contemporary genre". After a break occasioned by the Franco-Prussian war, it was his 1873 work, "Concert d'Amateurs dans un Atelier d'Artiste" which really established him in the public eye, and his art became in great demand, particularly in America.He continued to exhibit at the salon until the end of his life, being awarded a silver medal in 1876 for "Repose at the farm". He also won silver medals at the 1889 and 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Moreau became a Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur in 1892.Moreau painted in oil (including Grisaille) and watercolour, and during his life became well known for his historical depictions of the French upper classes in past centuries, though he was equally at home in genre landscape paintings featuring peasants and their everyday life. He provided watercolor illustrations and drawings for books by authors such as Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Alphonse Daudet and Honore de Balzac. He also wrote a book on the history of his family called "Les Moreaus" (1893).He died in Paris in 1906. His work is represented in museums in Carcassonne, Nantes and Troyes. In 1996, his work "Gypsy dancer" sold for over 260,000 Euros at auction, while, in America, in April 2010, "Concert d'amateurs dans un atelier d'artiste" realised over $70,000.

Described by one critic as an artist who 'emancipated himself from the traditions of his teaching and displayed his own individuality in his works'1, Moreau was able to apply his skills to landscape, genre and historical painting, equally adept at creating a medieval fantasy, or a Naturalist narrative, such as in the present lot. Moreau was a regular and prolific exhibitor at the Salon, and his work was in high demand during his lifetime, especially among American collectors. He also provided illustrations for important literary works by Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac and Voltaire. Moreau was awarded the Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1892 for his services to art.1 H.W.S., 'Sous La Feuille', The Magazine of Art Illustrated, vol. 3, 1880, p. 301.

Verso: Verschiedene Nummern und Etiketten, teils von Ausstellungen und 'U.S. Customs'. Rest. Rahmen. Adrien Moreau wurde zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als einer der großen Genremaler seiner Zeit gefeiert. Seine Gemälde mit teils historistischen Darstellungen waren auch in Amerika hoch begehrt. Viele seiner Werke wanderten in kalifornische Sammlungen und befinden sich noch heute in den Staaten. Darstellungen mit militärischen Bezügen finden sich eher selten. Mit dem Ausbruch des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges 1870/71 wurden auch die Strassen von Paris zu Schauplätzen kriegerischer Handlungen -Adrien Moreaus Atelier wurde durch eine Explosion zerstört; bis 1873 stellte er nicht mehr aus.
