The loss of the ship The Janson of Providence, Rhode Island, due to drifting ice, is depicted in three stages, shown from right to left. As Den Helder was the artist's home town, Mooij probably witnessed the event himself.

Mooji, 1837" lower left, titled beneath the image. 17" x 22" visible, 20 1/2" x 25" framed. A magnificent image of the Dutch warship "Walgheren" captained by J. Bart, showing the three-masted bark sailing of the Dutch coast in 1837. The ship shown broadside and stern flying two Dutch flags and and orange pennant with the number "40" on it. (Some minor spotting, a bit toned).

The Dictionary of Marine Artists by Dorothy Brewington cites Jan Mooy as a Dutch watercolorist, born in 1776 in Callantsoon. Active from 1796 to 1847, he was also a house painter and glazer. He died in 1847 in Den Helder. Copies of his works are in eight museums including the Peabody-Essex Museum and the Rijks Museum. Watercolor and ink on paper, 16.75" x 22" sight. Framed 26.25" x 31".
