SIGNED Karl Moon Antique 1907 "The Desert" Native American Fred Harvey Platinum Print FRAMED

            Est: $1,000 - $1,500

It is hand-signed in ink (lower left), blind stamped photographer's credit and 'Fred Harvey' copyright credit dated '1907' (recto); titled in ink (mount, recto). Karl Everton Moon (1879-1948) (often spelled Carl Moon) photograph entitled “The Desert” of a Native American looking towards The Desert. Born in Wilmington, Ohio, he became a photographer, painter, and illustrator who moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico as a young man where he operated a photography studio. In 1907, he moved into the Grand Canyon headquarters of Fred Harvey to manage Harvey's art business. He studied landscape painting with visiting artists Louis Akin, Thomas Moran, and Frank Sauerwein, and he also took many photographs and films of Pueblo Indians. In 1911, he married artist Grace Purdie and settled in Pasadena. He focused on landscape painting and illustrating children's stories co-authored with his wife. He was a member of The Cartoonist Club and the Pasadena Art Association. It was particularly the stories by James Fenimore Cooper that influenced the young Carl Moon's lifelong interest in American Indians. Although his words reveal much of the cultural insensitivity of the late 1800s, Moon's images suggest a more sympathetic attitude towards his subjects. Studying photography right out of high school, in 1903 he moved to the Southwest, where he began to paint and photograph Native Americans in New Mexico. His striking portraits soon began to attract national attention, and President Theodore Roosevelt even invited him to the White House to discuss his subjects. By the end of his career Moon had photographed twenty-nine tribes and villages throughout the Southwest. Frederick Henry Harvey (June 27, 1835 – February 9, 1901) was an entrepreneur who developed the Harvey House lunch rooms, restaurants, souvenir shops, and hotels, which served rail passengers on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, the Kansas Pacific Railway, the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, and the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis. As an innovative restaurateur and marketer, Fred Harvey is credited with creating the first restaurant chain in the United States. He was also a leader in promoting tourism in the American Southwest in the late 19th century. Fred Harvey and his employees successfully brought new higher standards of both civility and dining to a region widely regarded in the era as "the Wild West." He created a legacy which was continued by his sons and remained in the family until the death of a grandson in 1965. Embossed in print lower right: Copyright 1909 Fred Harvey. Inscribed in ink below print: Karl/Moon/ Coutudle [KARL] CARL MOON (1879-1948). Carl Moon was born in Ohio, the son of a physician. As a young man he apprenticed with photographers in Ohio, West Virginia, and Texas for six years before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1903. In 1904 he opened a photography studio for the purpose of creating "art studies" of Southwest Indians. By 1906 Moon's work was appearing in magazines and was exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution. It caught the eye of President Roosevelt who invited Moon to exhibit his work at the White House. The Fred Harvey Company commissioned Moon to create a collection of Indian photographs for them and he served as their artistic director during the late 19 aughts as well as becoming the official photographer for the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1911 Moon moved his studio to the Grand Canyon and for the next seven years documented the native peoples of the area making both studio portraits as well as photographing them in their towns. The Natural History Museum of the Smithsonian purchased a collection of these images in 1910. In 1914 Moon married another artist and the couple moved to Pasadena, California where he studied painting with Thomas Moran, Frank Saurewen and Louis Akin. Like his hand-colored photographs his paintings were meant to form a historic record of "vanishing America." In 1923 Henry E. Huntington purchased a collection of three hundred large-format photographs and twelve oil paintings from Moon. Provenance: Collection of Kurt Koegler.

GRAND CANYON COLORIZED PHOTOGRAPHS BY KARL MOON

            Est: $400 - $600

GRAND CANYON COLORIZED PHOTOGRAPHS BY KARL MOON Good lot of fourteen hand-tinted photographs, each 7 3/4" x 10", all depicting notable landscape views of the Grand Canyon, and all taken around the turn of the 20th century. The views presented here include panoramas of the canyon from Point Sublime, Hopi Point and Bisell's Point, views of Bright Angel Trail, Grand View Trail, and the Devil's Corkscrew, and more, several featuring early tourists on foot and on mules. One image, a view of the formation known as Zoroaster from the bank of the Colorado River at the foot of Bright Angel Trail, bears the mark of photographer KARL E. MOON (1879-1948), best known for his portraits of New Mexico Pueblo Indians. Moon managed the Grand Canyon photography studio of Fred Harvey from 1907-1911; it is likely that these images were produced by that studio at that time. Each image is mounted to a 13 1/2" x 11" backing, all bearing printed captions. All are covered with plastic film, easily removed, else very good.
