        Donald F. Montileaux (Born 1948) "Colors" Acrylic & Watercolor on Paper. Don Montileaux, a Lakota painter, carries on the traditions of his ancestors by translating ancient pictographs and visions of contemporary warriors onto animal hides. Montileaux was raised in Rapid City, Iowa. After graduating from high school he attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Once mentored by Herman Red Elk, Montileaux now mentors emerging artists and regularly visits reservations across the Plains.         Monte Yellow Bird Sr. [Black Pinto Horse] (Arikara/Hidatsa) + Donald Montileaux (Ogala Sioux, b. 1948) + James Black (Cheyenne) IAIA Family, 2022 vintage ledger, color pencil, marker "IAIA Family" draws inspiration from the family that IAIA has become. It features three prominent ledger artists from different decades of IAIA. In the center we see a depiction of the Three Drummers statue that was in the heart of the old campus when Don and Monte attended. Monte, the lead artist, drew this statue as well as the figure riding the horse directly to the right. Don created the person riding the horse in the top left of the work. James added the maiden and bird in the top right. In the background there are two columns listing prominent staff and faculty from 1968 and 1978, when Don and Monte attended IAIA. He received formal art training at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He continued to refine his skills and participated in numerous area art shows and many prestigious art shows nationally, while pursuing a professional career at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City for 22 years.
