Rafael Monleón y Torres Sold at Auction Prices

Naval painter, Illustrator

Rafael Monleón y Torres (1843 – 24 November 1900) was a Spanish artist (painting, engraving, ceramics), archaeologist, historian and naval pilot.

He was born in Valencia. His father was the architect, Sebastián Monleón Estellés [es], a professor at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos.[1] After studying there from 1855 to 1866, he joined the merchant marine and became a pilot; sailing around Europe. Later, he was a student of the marine artist Paul Jean Clays in Bruges, where he also studied engraving. Upon his return to Spain, he completed his studies with Carlos de Haes.[1]

At first, he was primarily a painter of azulejos, and his experience as a sailor gave him a particular talent for marine art. He focused on shipwrecks and other dramatic scenes, but he was also knowledgeable in regards to naval archaeology and history; which he was able to take advantage of when he was named the conservator/restorer for the Museo Naval de Madrid in 1870.[1]

His most ambitious work was never published during his lifetime: the treatise on the Historia gráfica de la navegación y de las construcciones navales en todos los tiempos y en todos los países (Graphic History of Navigation and Naval Construction...). It was illustrated with over a thousand drawings, blue prints and watercolors; completed while he was at the museum, together with hundreds of texts and vignettes on every known type of ship, European and Oriental. A small excerpt was later published as La Construcción Naval española en la obra de Rafael Monleón Torres.

He participated in every National Exhibition of Fine Arts after 1864, except for 1892, owing to his involvement in the celebrations for the four-hundredth anniversary of the "Discovery of America", which included an elaborate scale model of the Santa María being made as a gift to the United States.[2] As a result, he was awarded a second-class Cross of Naval Merit and the title of Commander in the Order of Charles III.

As an engraver, he provided illustrations on marine topics for La Ilustración Española y Americana, Nuevo Mundo (New World) [es] and other periodicals. He also created ceramics, some of which have been preserved at the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts. As a designer, he created his own office furniture. He died in Madrid, aged 57.

RAFAEL MONLEÓN Y TORRES (Valencia, 1843 - Madrid, 1900). "Calderón". Oil on canvas. Provenance; Collection don Bernardo Alonso Rentería. Signed Measurements: 70 x 110 cm; 92 x 131 cm (frame). Painter and engraver, son of the architect Sebastián Monleón, Rafael Monleón y Torres was first a nautical pilot, and traveled throughout Europe before beginning his pictorial training under the guidance of the masters Carlos de Haes and Rafael Montesinos. From his youth he devoted himself exclusively to marine painting, especially representing Levantine ports. Between 1864 and 1899 he exhibited his works regularly at the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts. After the 1869 edition, in which he presented three paintings, he traveled as a pilot to the north of France, where he became acquainted with the marine paintings of the Breton painter Théodore Weber. He then went to Bruges, where he had the opportunity to become a disciple of the old master Jan Pieter Clays and to meet Belgian engravers, especially Louis Allemand, specializing in etching. On his return he continued to send works to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, and in 1871 he was awarded a third class medal. In 1881 he won the same award again. In 1870 he was appointed painter of the Admiralty and restorer of the Naval Museum and on two occasions, in 1867 and 1879, he was awarded a gold medal at the Regional Exhibitions held in Valencia. He was also a renowned naval archaeologist, commissioned by the Government for the study, drawing up of plans and construction of the Santa María ship for the fourth centenary of the discovery of America. He was also responsible for the scientific reorganization and catalog of the Naval Museum of Madrid. Rafael Monleón is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the aforementioned Naval Museum in Madrid, the Gravina Fine Arts Museum in Alicante (MUBAG) and other public and private collections.

RAFAEL MONLEÓN Y TORRES (Valencia, 1843 - Madrid, 1900) "Shipwreck". Oil on canvas. With slight repainting and damage to the frame. Signed in the lower right area. Measurements: 61 x 91,5 cm; 64,5 x 95 cm (frame). In this canvas the painter captures an image of romantic heritage, both in the dramatic and narrative theme and in the way of conceiving the landscape at an expressive and formal level. It is a magnificent coastal landscape with a sunny atmosphere, peaceful except for the waves breaking violently against the rocks. With regard to its composition, the landscape is closed off on the left side with the rich, staggered upward slopes, but opens up on the right side to allow us to see a distant, low horizon, over which a wide, naturalistic sky unfolds with a typically Romantic sense of scenery.
