Signed MONK lower left. Matted and framed under glass in a molded giltwood frame. Sight: 17" H x 22" W. Framed: 25" H x 29" W. Note: William Monk was known for his watercolor depictions of ceremonial events including the English Royal Jubilee and the Irish International Exhibition of 1907. 2nd item: John Gordon Hargrave (United Kingdom, 1894-1982) watercolor on paper illustration harbor scene painting depicting a grouping of sailors, possibly pirates, strolling along a cobblestone street before a spyglass store, the masts of several ships visible in the background.         William Monk (1863-1937) was the son of the gunmaker William Henry Monk, whose business was in Foregate Street. This is an etching of that street in Chester, UK, ca 1906. William Monk R.E. was a highly respected figure in the British Etching Revival, a movement which saw the rebirth of etching as an artistically creative form of printmaking. he studied art at the Chester School of Art and etching at the Antwerp Academy, Belgium. His prints celebrate a vision of England which ranges from the quaint corners of picturesque Chester, through the age-old tradition of historic colleges, to the grandeur and vitality of metropolitan London. Examples of his work can be found in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Imperial War Museum. He exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 2013 the Grosvenor Museum, Chester, held an exhibition of his work: 'A Vision of England: Etchings by William Monk'.

Very light surface soiling overall and areas of crackle which appear to have been stablized. Areas of inpainting throughout predominately to sky and water as well as few edges of vegitation. Most porominate area of inpainting is to left edge of tree at upper left quadrant. Unframed.

        OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE - WILLIAM MONK (1863-1937) VIEW OF THE TEMPORARY CENOTAPH IN WHITEHALL (1920) etching framed Taken from Monk's Calendar for 1920, The Cenotaph, Whitehall. London. Published by W. Monk. Drawn, Etched and Printed by W. Monk at 118, New Bond Street, W.1. The Calendar was published annually, with a distinctive London view. This representation of the Cenotaph shows the temporary wood and plaster monument that was erected for the Peace Celebrations on 19 July, 1919 and taken down in January 1920. The permanent stone cenotaph was unveiled on 11 November, 1920. Around 100 copies of each calendar were produced, making the prints rare. Provenance: Dr Alan Borg C.B.E.
