JOSÉ MONGRELL TORRENT (Valencia, 1870 – Barcelona, 1937). "Waiting for the catch", 1921. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. It presents a small patch in the central right area.

      Est: €24,000 - €26,000

JOSÉ MONGRELL TORRENT (Valencia, 1870 - Barcelona, 1937). "Waiting for Fishing", 1921. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. It has a small patch in the central right area. Measurements: 130 x 104 cm; 148 x 120 cm (frame). José Mongrell studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, where he was a disciple of Ignacio Pinazo and Joaquín Sorolla. He gained artistic renown thanks to his participation in numerous competitions and exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona. In 1897 he produced, with great success, the bullfighting poster for the Feria de San Jaime in Valencia, and in fact his poster for the Valencia July Fair of 1912 was reissued in 1971 on the occasion of the centenary of these festivities. He obtained a teaching post at the San Jorge School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he lived for the rest of his life. Of particular note from this period is the work he did for the Palace of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in charge of the Diputació de Barcelona, as well as his portrait of King Alfonso XIII. He also produced mosaics in the Art Nouveau style, such as those for the great arch of the Mercado de Colón and the façade of the Estación del Norte, both in Barcelona. Mongrell devoted himself to genre scenes, portraits and landscapes, and was a master of capturing the instant, giving his scenes vitality and dynamism through bright, naturalistic colours and light. Traditionally pigeonholed as a disciple of Sorolla, Mongrell, however, only learned from the master that which helped him to extend his art. The painter developed his work somewhere between regionalism and modernism, but a certain French-influenced symbolism can also be seen in his work. In fact, Mongrell was characterised by his emphasis on content, attributing to the image a meaning that went beyond pure appearance. At a time when grand, idealistic and dramatic historical compositions prevailed, Mongrell developed a style of painting concerned with depicting the past and present from an everyday, gentle and picturesque perspective, generally far removed from the grandiloquence and theatricality of academic history painting. Despite his technical mastery, Mongrell did not, like others, fall into a refined mannerism at the service of an inconsequential subject matter, but developed a fully personal language, characterised by its dynamism and expressive freedom. José Mongrell is currently represented in the Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V and the Museo Nacional de Cerámica y de Artes Suntuarias González Martí in Valencia, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Asturias, Badajoz and Pontevedra, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Museo de La Habana and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, among others. The mastery of Mongrell's luminism, a key painter for understanding Valencian Impressionism, is demonstrated in the present canvas. In it the artist gives us one of his favourite themes, the costumbrista, which unites a coastal landscape with everyday scenes of daily life, featuring two popular women captured with a dignity that puts them on a par with the ancient classical heroes. This is perfectly visible in the present work, in which our gaze is irremediably caught by the magnetic expression of what appears to be a mother and daughter depicted in Mongrell's humble style. The mother, dressed in the folk costume of Valencian fishermen, gazes into the distance, waiting for the catch, while the daughter is inside the boat, waiting for her mother's orders. The figures appear in the foreground, occupying most of the pictorial surface, standing out against a magnificently worked beach landscape, the tones of which seem to echo the colours of the figures' clothes.

(Valencia 1870–1937 Barcelona) Mending the Nets (“Arreglando las redes”), signed J. Mongrell, oil on canvas, 76 x 90 cm, framed Provenance: Sale, Sotheby’s, London, 21 June 1989, lot 591; European Private Collection. 49. A certificate issued by Francisco Javier Pérez Rojas, Valencia, 28 June 2022, is available upon request. The emergence of Luminism as an alternative to academic rigidity marked a pivotal moment in the modernisation of pictorial practice in fin-de-siècle Spanish art. Masters such as Joaquín Sorolla and his favourite disciple, José Mongrell y Torrent, skilfully captured their surroundings with a loose, pulsating brushstroke. While still rooted in the conservative tenets of their academic training, their approach bore a close affinity to the ground-breaking precepts of French Impressionism. Mongrell, in particular, turned his paintings set in his favoured summer retreat at Culella’s beach into an ideal backdrop for the poeticisation of the world of labour. His work emphasised the dignity of humble characters who, in carrying out their daily chores, emerge as true heroes of modernity. The solidity of Mongrell’s protagonists, marked by their unassuming elegance and serenity, combined with the colourful boldness of his palette and the agility of his brushwork, transports us to the most intimate and vital vision of Valencian costumbrismo, overflowing with the hypnotic luminosity of the Mediterranean.

JOSÉ MONGRELL TORRENT (Valencia, 1870 - Barcelona, 1937). "Sorolla with a gypsy woman". Oil on canvas. Signed and dedicated to Joaquín Sorolla in the lower right corner. Certified by Bernardino de Pantorba, 1979. Measurements: 89 x 98 cm; 118 x 126 cm (frame). Mongrell was a key painter of impressionism, with an important debt to his master and friend Joaquín Sorolla, but with a strong and personal personality which is evident in this imposing canvas. The subject is already singular: Sorolla finds himself in a gypsy camp in front of a woman who seems to be reading his hand. A silent dialogue is established between the two through the exchange of glances. Sorolla lowers his head in a reflective attitude, perhaps after hearing the admonishing words of the gypsy woman. Her weathered face, wrapped in a handkerchief, is hardened but at the same time kindly. Mongrell is a true master at capturing the psychology of his characters: here, the silent dialogue captures us through the mysterious magnetism of the expressions, which always preserve an impenetrable dignity. Mongrell goes beyond genres, for here he mixes social themes with costumbrismo and homage to his mentor friend. The scene is dominated by a warm palette reflecting the Mediterranean sun: an intense cerulean blue is reflected in the variety of ochres, browns and reddish tones contrasted, though toned and balanced, with the luminous whites and yellows of the costumes.

The influence of his mentor Joaquín Sorolla can be appreciated in this magnificent painting by José Mongrell, but what is striking is a way of resolving the composition in which he himself was a master: with audacity, Mongrell has superimposed different levels of reality, from the fishermen's wives waiting in the foreground for their husbands to the bathers in the background, passing through the high society lady who enjoys a pleasant summer day. The framing is almost photographic, as it cuts out the boat on which the young woman is leaning with her basket, waiting to fill it with fish. On the left, the oxen can be glimpsed, ready to load the boats that are to dock on the coast. Multiple scenes are interwoven in the painting, worked with different levels of chromatic and luminous definition, in a faithful atmospheric rendering of the different planes. Valencian luminism reaches the highest levels here. José Mongrell studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he was a disciple of Ignacio Pinazo and Joaquín Sorolla.

JOSÉ MONGRELL TORRENT (Valencia, 1870 - Barcelona, 1937). "Marina". Oil on canvas. Signed on the left side. Measurements: 50 x 70 cm; 81,5 x 102 cm (frame). The influence of his mentor Joaquín Sorolla can be appreciated in this magnificent painting by José Mongrell, but what is striking is a way of resolving the composition in which he himself was a master: with audacity, Mongrell has superimposed different levels of reality, from the fishermen's wives who await in the foreground the return of their husbands, to the bathers in the background, passing through the lady of high society who enjoys a pleasant summer day. The framing is almost photographic, as it cuts out the boat on which the young woman is leaning with her basket, waiting to fill it with fish. To the left, the oxen can be glimpsed, ready to load the boats that will dock at the coast. Multiple scenes are interwoven in the painting, being worked with different levels of chromatic and light definition, in a reliable atmospheric rendering of the different planes. Valencian luminism reaches here the highest levels. José Mongrell studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he was a disciple of Ignacio Pinazo and Joaquín Sorolla. He was gaining artistic renown thanks to his participation in numerous competitions and exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona. In 1897 he made, with great success, the bullfighting poster for the San Jaime Fair in Valencia, and in fact his poster for the July Fair in Valencia in 1912 was reedited in 1971 on the occasion of the centenary of these festivities. He obtained a teaching post at the San Jorge School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he lived for the rest of his life. From this period, the work he did for the Palace of the Generalitat de Cataluña, in charge of the Diputación de Barcelona, stands out, as well as his portrait of King Alfonso XIII. He also made mosaics in the modernist style, such as those of the great arch of the Mercado de Colón and the façade of the Estación del Norte, both in Barcelona. Mongrell was dedicated to genre genre, portraiture and landscape, and was a master of capturing the moment, making his scenes acquire vitality and dynamism, through bright and naturalistic colors and lights. Traditionally pigeonholed as a disciple of Sorolla, Mongrell only learned from the master that which served to extend his art. The painter developed his work somewhere between regionalism and modernism, but a certain French-influenced symbolism can also be appreciated in his work. In fact, Mongrell was characterized by emphasizing the content, attributing to the image a meaning that goes beyond pure appearance. At a time when great historical, idealistic and dramatic compositions triumphed, this painter developed a style of painting concerned with capturing the past and the present from an everyday, friendly and picturesque perspective, generally far removed from the grandiloquence and theatricality of academic history painting. Despite his technical mastery, Mongrell did not fall like others into a refined mannerism at the service of an unimportant theme, but developed a fully personal language, characterized by its dynamism and expressive freedom. Currently, José Mongrell is represented in the Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V and the Museo Nacional de Cerámica y de Artes Suntuarias González Martí of Valencia, the Museo de Bellas Artes of Asturias, Badajoz and Pontevedra, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam, the Museo de La Habana and the Museo de Bellas Artes of Buenos Aires, among others.

JOSÉ MONGRELL TORRENT (Valencia, 1870 - Barcelona, 1937). "Pescadora de Cullera", 1915. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and located in the lower right corner and on the back. Measurements: 90 x 75 cm; 108 x 92 cm (frame). This impressive work reflects the mastery of Mongrell's luminism, a key painter for understanding not only Valencian impressionism, but Spanish impressionism in general. In it the artist tackles one of his favorite themes, the costumbrista, which unites a landscape and atmosphere with everyday scenes of daily life, starring popular characters captured with a dignity that equates them to the ancient classical heroes. His characters thus become modern heroes, humble or proud, indifferent even, but always admirable and captured with a poetic accent that transcends the simple representation of the natural. This is perfectly visible in our work, in which our gaze is irremediably trapped by the magnetic expression of the fisherwoman, who advances ignoring our presence, like a caryatid of Antiquity. Behind her we see some fishermen who are fishing by the shore, worked in a resolute and energetic attitude. The characters appear in the foreground and background, occupying most of the pictorial surface, highlighted on a magnificently worked beach landscape, whose shades seem to echo the colors of the fishermen's clothes. The scene is dominated by a warm palette reflecting the Mediterranean sun, which contrasts with the dark tonality of the fisherwoman's costume, of great expressive force. Mongrell also produced several works for the Ortega lithography, among them several bullfighting posters. He was also the author of several posters for the Valencian Regional Exhibition. It is also worth mentioning the importance of his modernist mosaics, in which he knew how to transmit the vibration of the material: the one that decorates the great arch of the Mercado de Colón and the one located on the façade of the Estación del Norte (1915). Also noteworthy for their quality are the fresco decorations he made for the Casa Ferrer, in Cullera (Valencia), characterized by a fully modernist and totally personal language. JOSÉ MONGRELL TORRENT (Valencia, 1870 - Barcelona, 1937). "Valencian courtship", L'Hort de Beses, Cullera, 1939. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Work published in the Reasoned Catalog of the artist. Attached certificate issued by Josefina Mongrell, daughter of the artist. Work published on March 17, 1976 in the newspaper “Las Provincias”. Measurements: 75 x 90 cm; 95 x 111 cm (frame). José Mongrell dedicated a large part of his pictorial production to immortalize the colorful and lively Valencian society. Popular types, young women and entire families were captured by Mongrell through a fully personal language, characterized by its dynamism and expressive freedom. The Valencian artist recreates in this canvas a colorful costumbrista scene starring two young girls dressed as Valencian llauradoras, a popular costume typical of the Valencian territory characterized by the explosion of colors of their skirts, by the richness of their spinning fabrics and by the bright colors of their brocades. The two young women look in front of them in a smiling and uninterested attitude, while a group of characters chat around a table, selecting the flowers that will decorate and accompany the costumes and dresses of the rest of the llauradoras, who smile in the background. A last character, dressed in the popular manner with espardeñas and covering his head with a handkerchief, addresses the young women in an active attitude. The scene is dominated by an exceptionally warm palette that reflects the Mediterranean sun of the Valencian garden of L'Hort de Beses and highlights the magnificent technique that led José Mongrell to become one of the most important Valencian artists of the time.
