Piet Mondrian Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, b. 1872 - d. 1944

Piet Mondrian, born in the Netherlands in 1872, studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam for three years before moving on to become one of the founders of the De Stijl movement. Primarily modern and abstract pieces, Piet Mondrian's artwork consists of geometric blocks of colors and vertical and horizontal lines.

He was an early member of the Theosophical Society, and Piet Mondrian's paintings reflect his belief in the presence of perfectly balanced energy that exists in all things, which he represents with simplified shapes and colors. The compositions of Piet Mondrian's paintings are meant to intentionally communicate the positive and negative, or female and male, dynamics of reality. Piet Mondrian's legacy left behind Neoplasticism, which became a major influence on modern abstract art. An array of Mondrian's art for sale as well as other rare abstract paintings are available at Invaluable.

Piet Mondrian first became preoccupied with the sea in his naturalistic works, which he created between 1909 and 1911 during extended stays in the village of Domburg on the Zeeland coast in Holland. During his first stay in Paris from 1911 to 1914, he became acquainted with the Cubism of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, whose formal and thematic elements found their way into his art. He returned to the Netherlands in the summer of 1914 and spent the following war years working on studies of the sea, which culminated in his pier and ocean paintings. He assimilated Cubism and adapted it for his own works, adopting the horizontal oval as a defining design element. The round shape could also be understood as a view into the distance. He also introduced a clear grid structure. For Mondrian, however, the horizontal-vertical arrangement did not have an exclusively pictorial function as it did for the Cubists, but had almost mystical implications: He regarded the horizontal and the vertical as fundamentally opposed principles that must work together to create a unity. Although Mondrian's motifs are always found in nature, such as the movement of waves or the surface of the sea, he reduced his language of signs to its essential pictorial form: The sea is made up of of short lines and crosses that, when one moves in front of the work, are reminiscent of flickering light on the surface of the water or the swell of waves. His aim was not to achieve non-representationalism, but rather to explore and dissolve representationalism itself. The early ocean works are extremely rare and can usually only be found in museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice or the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The drawing offered here is undoubtedly one of the most important works in the group and powerfully illustrates Mondrian's revolutionary idea of "sculpture in painting". Piet Mondrian was a Dutch artist who played a pivotal role in the development of abstract art, particularly in the style known as De Stijl. He was born on March 7, 1872, in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and passed away on February 1, 1944, in New York City, United States.Mondrian initially started as a landscape painter and was influenced by the natural world. However, over time, he began to simplify his compositions, reducing them to basic geometric shapes and primary colors. This transition marked the beginnings of his distinctive style. In 1917, Mondrian co-founded the De Stijl movement along with fellow artists and architects, including Theo van Doesburg. De Stijl, meaning "The Style" in Dutch, aimed to achieve a universal visual language through abstraction, focusing on pure forms and colors. Mondrian's work became synonymous with the movement, and he became one of its leading figures.Mondrian's most iconic works are his compositions of black lines and primary colors filling rectangular grids. These paintings, often referred to as "Neo-Plasticism" or "The Mondrian Grid," reflect his belief in the spiritual harmony and universal order that could be achieved through abstraction and simplicity. In 1938, Mondrian moved to London to escape the increasing political tensions in Europe. He eventually settled in New York City in 1940, where he spent the last years of his life. During this period, he continued to refine his style and produced some of his most renowned works.Piet Mondrian's influence on modern art and design has been profound. His approach to abstraction and the use of primary colors and geometric forms had a lasting impact on artists and designers of the 20th century and beyond. His work continues to be celebrated and exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide. Measures 6.8 x 9 Verso is blank. Mounted to archival quality paper.
