      Dec. 08, 2022

Jean Ferdinand Monchablon (French, 1854-1904) The rakers, 1886 Oil on canvas 35

      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Jean Ferdinand Monchablon (French, 1854-1904) The rakers, 1886 Oil on canvas 35 x 52 inches (88.9 x 132.1 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Jan Monchablon / 1886 Inscribed lower left: Oeuvre II PROVENANCE: Beaumont Art Galleries, Chicago, Illinois; Arthur A. Gallagher, Northbrook, Illinois, acquired from the above, 1939; Thence by descent to the present owner. This lot is accompanied by the 1939 invoice from Beaumont Art Galleries. 1886 was a significant year for the landscape painter Jean Ferdinand Monchablon, noted for his crisp and luminous scenes of his native Châtillon-sur-Saône in the Voges region of France. That year he decided to uproot his family from Paris, where he had enjoyed consistent and regular success exhibiting in the annual Paris Salon since 1881, and return to his native region which was the wellspring of his creativity as a landscapist. He signed a ten-year lease on property at Châtillon, and there dedicated himself to painting quiet rivers carving through open pastures and gently rolling hills with an intriguing blend of almost photographic realism and lucid impressionistic light. The present work conveys the sense of exquisite stillness and reverie for which the artist was especially admired. The same year, Monchablon took a trip to the Netherlands in order to study the work of 17th-century Golden Age masters. His landscapes, like those of the Dutch, are characterized by large skies, sweeping panoramic views of the countryside, and meticulous detail and craftsmanship. The artist was so enamored of the Dutch tradition following his trip that he began signing his works with the Dutch version of his name: Jan Monchablon. HID01801242017

Signed lower right, Jan Monchablon with a tag on the front, and also signed on the back of the canvas. Titled in French, Trefles et chardons sur la vallee de Jonvelle, H te saone, Jan Monchablon. The painting retains original labels and a Chicago studio framing label on reverse. Good condition, there is craquelure throughout the sky. There original gilt frame is in excellent condition with the original glass. Painting measures 21 1/2" x 29". Frame measures 25" x 32 1/2". From AskArt: "Jean Ferdinand Monchablon was a landscape painter who focused his subject matter on the Vosges region of France where he was born and lived. While many of the great landscapists of the previous generation, such as the Barbizon painters, traveled throughout France to capture its various regions, during the 1870s and 1880s it became common for artists to remain close to home and become specialists on the distinctive qualities of their native landscapes. Monchablon was no exception, and he composed an oeuvre of crisp and luminous works depicting the quiet rivers, open pastures, cool forests and gently rolling hills of area immediately surrounding his native village of Chatillons-sur-Saône. His landscapes often depict broad views of the region, and evoke a strong sense of the structure of each individual site. Topography and the distinctive characteristics are rendered with such precision that certain sites may still be identified in the present day. Still, Monchablon's landscape views serve as more than simple visual records of the village: Monchablon was exceptional in his ability to depict the subtle tonal gradations created by soft, clear sunlight. His landscapes often give the impression of a window, so strong is their clarity of light and color. Monchablon exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1881 and received silver medals at the Expositions Universelle in 1889 and in 1900. He was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1905. He also exhibited internationally, including at the annual Carnegie International Exhibitions in Pittsburgh, PA. Museum Collections: Amiens, Musée des Beaux-Arts; Arras, Musée des Beaux-Arts; Nancy, Musée des Beaux-Arts; Nantes, Musée des Beaux-Arts; Milwaukee; Stockton, CA, Haggin Museum."
