Josse de Momper, An Evening Landscape with a Couple

      Est: €18,000 - €22,000

CertificateDr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, 3.4. 2015.The present work is one of those rare pieces which can almost certainly be identified as an early work by this master. The painting presents somewhat of an anomaly in his otherwise fairly homogenous oeuvre. It is stylistically comparable to works made in the first few years of the 1600s, such as a landscape in Italian private ownership which Klaus Ertz has dated to around 1600/1605 (K. Ertz, op. cit., cat. no. 50, illus. p. 109). This work also shows a closed body of water with buildings around its banks and a path with figures leading from the right to the front of the image. Not only are the composition, dimensions and format similar, but also the evening mood of the scene, which is rarely encountered in de Momper's works.

Josse de Momper, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Harbour Scene with Fishermen

      Est: €50,000 - €55,000

CertificateKlaus Ertz, Lingen, 3.9.1999.This painting is the result of a cooperation between the Antwerp painters Josse de Momper the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Younger. The former painted the landscape, and the latter the figures. Depicted is a bay protected by a peninsula on which a fort has been built. Fishermen have rolled up their sails, laid their nets out to dry and moored their boats, and further small figures of fishermen can be seen selling their latest catch on a harbour in the foreground. The composition opens up towards the sea, and to the right a small strip of coast with a distant town is visible in the background. The picture belongs to the small group of Josse de Momper's coastal landscapes, which Dr. Klaus Ertz has summarised under the title "Befestigungsanlagen" (fortifications) in his monograph on the artist. He plans to include and illustrate this painting as a work by the artist and Jan Brueghel the Younger in the additional volume of his catalogue raisonné, dated circa 1630.
