      Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Remnants of a signature lower left: F ... mper Frans de Momper was the nephew of the landscape painter Joos de Momper. He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1629. He created landscapes in the manner of his uncle. His palette was later influenced by the tonal colours of Jan van Goyen. The present colourful landscape was probably created before Momper's move to the northern Netherlands in 1646. A similar composition with a village fair was offered on the French art market in 1978 (see RKD picture archive, no. 547204).

      Oct. 03, 2023

      FRANS DE MOMPER (1603-1660/61)

      Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Landscape with a village fair in a vast hilly landscape. C. 1630-1645. Oil on canvas (relined). Traces of a signature at lower right 'F. ...mper'. Provenance: Gallery Pintelon, Aalst, 1986 Lempertz, 20.11.2010, lot 1063 Private collection, Aalst Frans de Momper was the nephew of Joos de Momper II (1564-1635). Until 1646, he worked in Antwerp where he was a member of the Guild of St. Luke. In that year his first wife dies upon which he moves to the Northern Netherlands. In Antwerp, his style is still indebted to that of his influential uncle. In the Netherlands, he becomes more influenced by the tempered landscape of Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). Presumably this large and colourful landscape dates from his early period in Antwerp. The theme of village fairs and the vast landscape in the background are also typical of Flemish landscape painting. Signed paintings by Frans de Momper are extremely rare. Besides the many uncertain attributions, only a few other signed paintings are known, including a comparable large landscape in the collection of the KMSKB (inv. 6046). 6046).

      Jun. 05, 2021

      Frans de Momper, Winter Landscape

      Est: €18,000 - €20,000

Signed on the house in the right foreground: f. d. momper Certificate Dr. Fritz Heinemann, Munich, 1.2.1954 (copy of the certificate). Frans de Momper, nephew of the better known Josse de Momper, painted numerous monochromatic landscapes such as the present work. His paintings are characterised by the expansive and generous composition of the landscapes as well as a striking rendering of the leafless trees in the foreground. The artist especially favoured winter landscapes, which he painted using almost the entire spectrum of brown tones available to him. In this work, Frans de Momper depicts a dark shadow falling over the elevation in the foreground across the two travellers with their horse and dog and the firewood collector on the right. This almost modern style, which is also evident here in the rendering of the trees and the layout of the hilly landscape, is typical of Frans de Momper's oeuvre. We would like to thank Ellis Dullaart (RKD, The Hague) for confirming the authenticity of this work upon examination of high-resolution photographs. The piece will be included in the RKD database.

Prof. Dr. Teresa Bischoff The sale of the SØR Rusche Collection is a concept auction, creating a dialogue between paintings by Old Masters and works by contemporary artists. Presented in pairs, the artworks communicate with each other, though each single piece is on offer as a separate lot. The present lot corresponds with lot no 1560.

WINTERLICHE DORFLANDSCHAFT MIT REISENDEN Öl auf Eichenholz. 25,5 x 31,2 cm. Rechts unten signiert „Momper“. Ungerahmt. Beigegeben ein Kurzgutachten im Original von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, vom 27. Juli 2019. (1211317) (11) Frans de Momper, 1603 Antwerp – 1660 WINTRY VILLAGE LANDSCAPE WITH TRAVELLERS Oil on oak panel. 25.5 x 31.2 cm. Signed „Momper“ lower right. Unframed. A short expert‘s report by Dr Klaus Ertz, Lingen, dated 27 July 2019 is enclosed in original. Dr Ertz, author of the catalogue raisonné of the paintings by Josse de Mompers the Younger (1564-1635) dated 1986, has turned to the paintings by his nephew and notes that Frans de Momper‘s oeuvre gradually developed into the more monochrome images of the Dutchmen and in his opinion the painting on offer for sale in this lot is at the turning point between Flemish and Dutch painting, dating to the 1630s.
