MOLIJN, PIETER DE 1595 London - 1661 Haarlem Title: Landscape with two Farm Carts and Pedestrians on the Way. Technique: Oil on wood. Mounting: Partially parquetted. Measurement: 35.5 x 31cm. Notation: Signed lower left: "PMolijn". Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; Art dealer Castendijk, Rotterdam, 1990; Presumably auction Christie's, London, 2nd June, 1792, lot 65; Presumably auction of the collection dissolution after his death, Schomberg House, London, spring 1789, lot 37; Presumably Sammlung Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788). We are grateful to Ellis Dullaart, RKD, Den Haag, who confirmed the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph. The provenance history of this painting is particularly exciting from an art historical perspective: the collection of the English painter Thomas Gainsborough included a painting by Pieter de Molijn with this motif of peasant carts on the road in front of a croft. As another version of Molijn's painting exists, it is not possible to determine beyond doubt which of the two known panels belonged to Gainsborough, who painted a free version based on this motif (now in the Fine Arts Museum, San Francisco). However, minor motif similarities or deviations in the other painting suggest that the work shown here is the one owned by Thomas Gainsborough. Kleiner alter Riss am rechten Rand oben. Insgesamt aber sehr schön Mounted on the cardboard of the Sharp Collection. Small old tear at upper right margin. The existence of "duplicate drawings" testifies both to the popularity of Molijn's drawings among his contemporaries and to their character as art or collectors' items. In 1997, Hans-Ulrich Beck, probably the best expert of Molijn's work, published a compilation of such pairs of drawings, which the artist made himself, apparently to satisfy the demand for particularly popular motifs. It is noteworthy that the Kornfeld Collection contains two examples of drawings, each of which has been proven to exist in two versions (see lot 2144). After years of little drawing around 1630/40, during which Pieter Molijn was active on the board of the Guild of St Luke and probably also very busy with non-artistic matters (1631-49), the artist began to draw extensively. This arguably most productive drawing phase in the last decade of his life is impressive both in terms of quantity as well as productivity. Molijn had now found his distinctive style and black chalk as his preferred technique. Given that his works were from the outset conceived as collector's items, and were generally signed and dated, it can also be assumed that there was a great demand for his works among contemporary enthusiasts. The present sheet is a characteristic work from this creative phase. The provenance of this drawing dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, when it was acquired by the important English print and drawing collector William Esdaile. Oil on canvas, measurements: 140 x 100 cm, measurements with frame: 164 x 120 cm. Pieter de Molijn (London, April 6, 1595-Haarlem, March 23, 1661) was a Dutch painter and engraver of the Baroque period, specialized in the landscape genre. He sometimes collaborated with Frans Hals. He was born in London into a Flemish family. His parents came from Ghent and Brussels; It is assumed that they emigrated to England for work reasons. Little is known about the artist's early years. It is believed that he undertook a journey to Italy before 1616, when he entered the guild of Saint Luke of Haarlem. Unfortunately, there are no known works dated before 1625. Between 1616 and 1627 he lived in Delft, where he married in 1624 and had seven children. He settled permanently in Haarlem and died there. He was a socially recognized figure, and thus, he was a member of the city's Civic Guard on three occasions (1624, 1627 and 1630). Bibliography: Biography of Pieter Molyn included in De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen (1718), written by Arnold Houbraken, included in the Digital library for Dutch literature.

Rudolf', 1962, no.113.  London, Alfred Brod Gallery, 'Exhibition of Old Master Drawings', 1969, no.113.  Note:  Amongst the few surviving early works by Molyn are two landscapes in watercolour in Berlin (one dated 1629), and a panoramic landscape dated 1630 at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam [RP-T-1948-405], in which dense, strong watercolour has been applied over a black chalk sketch in a similar manner to the present drawing (See Marijn Schapelhouman and Peter Schatborn, 'Land & Water, Dutch Drawings from the 17th Century in the Rijksmusuem Print Room', Amsterdam, 1987, pp.27-28, illustrated.) These works suggest that Molyn may, like Jan van Goyen (1596-1656), have made extensive use of colour in his works of the 1620s and early 1630s, the period of his career to which this drawing undoubtedly dates. Several of the early sale catalogues (mentioned in the Provenance above) record the presence on the sheet's verso of a counterproof black chalk drawing depicting a path by a fence. In the Sotheby's 1992 sale catalogue entry, thanks is given to Dr Hans Ulrich-Beck for providing early provenance information.  In this confidently executed and beautifully preserved drawing, the low horizon of the scene affords particular prominence to the sky, creating a sense of a vast expanse despite, in fact, being a village environment, something of a departure from the more open landscapes which the artist returned to with greater frequency. Indeed, Molyn here manages to minimise the human presence, reducing the figures to a tiny scale, and instead drawing the viewer's attention to the green foliage, imbued with a sense of movement from its rapid and fluid execution. A great number of Dutch landscape drawings of this time were made within framing lines and broad margins, as finished works for sale, but these margins, unlike in the present work, have almost always been trimmed off at some point in the intervening centuries.

He was a socially well-known figure, a member of the city's Civic Guard on three occasions. It is believed that he was a student of Esaias van de Velde. He collaborated on occasions with Frans Hals. His work is preserved in: Louvre Museum, Rijksmuseum, Metropolitan Museum, Getty Center, etc.

        Jul. 19, 2022

        Attributed to Pieter Molyn,

        Est: £2,500 - £3,500

Attributed to Pieter Molyn, Dutch 1595-1661- A wooded rural scene on the outskirts of a village; oil on panel, 40.1 x 54.8 cm., (unframed). Note: Working during the 17th-Century Dutch Golden Age, Molyn would have faced substantial competition from his artistic contemporaries. The prevalent talent in Northern Europe during this time no doubt motivated him to experiment in genres including portraiture, seascapes and historical scenes, yet his talents principally lay in landscape painting. In the wake of a trip to Italy in around 1618, his works transitioned from Flemish-inspired Mannerist landscapes to more tonal naturalistic compositions with sweeping diagonals. The present work corresponds to the former style and can be dated to c.1630. Panel has been professionally cradled. The paint surface is stable on the support. The painted surface shows the natural irregularities in the grain of the wooden panel beneath. A horizontal line demarcating the lowest third shows (natural grain of the wood). Some minor losses especially along the edges and at the top right corner. A more significant 2.2 cm. horizontal loss on the right edge (lower). A minor area of blistering paint in the left of the central tree's leaves. Further minor losses, marks, and surface dirt. Under UV lamp, a few retouchings in the upper left and right corners (see images), presumably to address abrasion from contact with a previous frame. No other areas of retouching visible. In very good overall condition.

        Est: £4,000 - £6,000
