Andres Molinary (American/New Orleans, 1847-1915) , "City Park, Old Allard Plantation, New Orleans", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 15 in. x 24 in., framed Provenance: Mary Helen Washburn, student of Andres Molinary at Newcomb College, New Orleans, LA; thence by descent. Note: As a young man in his twenties, Andres Molinary left his native Gibraltar for New Orleans with the intention of visiting his uncle, who was a partner in an importing business. After several years of traveling throughout Mexico and Central America, Molinary settled permanently in the Crescent City in 1876. With the encouragement of his uncle, Molinary pursued a career as an artist and eventually opened an art studio. He soon earned portrait commissions and furthered his interest in landscape and genre painting. Always engaging and popular, Molinary's studio became a gathering place for the coterie of local artists and writers. As an active member of the local art community, Molinary was instrumental in the founding of the Cup and Saucer Club, Southern Art Union and Artists' Association of New Orleans. The unique landscape of southern Louisiana fascinated the artist. As New Orleans began to expand its environs beyond the French Quarter and the surrounding areas near the Mississippi River, Molinary documented the growth of the city. Many of his landscape paintings depict the developing, but still clearly rural, communities on the outskirts of the growing city. In the work offered here, Molinary depicts a slightly different view of the same scene sold in these rooms on February 20, 2016. The Allard family had possession of the land along Bayou St. John from the late 1700s to 1845, when it was acquired by businessman John McDonogh. He willed the land to the cities of New Orleans and Baltimore upon his death in 1850, around the same time a movement within the country to construct urban parks was taking shape. In 1859, New Orleans resolved ownership with Baltimore and declared the land a public park. The space that would become City Park remained largely undeveloped until the late 1890s, providing the perfect subject for Molinary.

Andres Molinary (Gibraltarian/New Orleans, 1847-1915), "Portrait of Martin Behrman (1864-1926), Mayor of New Orleans", oil on canvas, signed upper right, "From W.E. Seebold, Stationer, Engraver & Fine Art Dealer, New Orleans, LA" label en verso, 30 in. x 25 in., period frame. Provenance: Descended in the family of the artist, New Orleans. Note: Working with both landscapes and portraits, Andres Molinary often recorded on canvas both the local scenery and prominent citizens of Louisiana, including General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard and Senator John Slidell. Therefore, it is not surprising that he would have been called upon to paint this distinguished portrait of Martin Behrman, who served as Mayor of New Orleans for almost seventeen years until his death in 1926. Behrman, the longest-serving mayor in New Orleans history, was born in New York, but grew up on the west bank in Algiers. Losing both of his parents by the age of twelve, Behrman began supporting himself by working at a local grocery store. Due to his talents and ambition, he rose to the positions of a clerk of the City Council, a delegate to the state Constitutional Convention, and a state auditor before being elected mayor for the first time in 1904. Provenance: Walker Ronaldson, Jr., New Orleans, LA; D. Benjamin Kleinpeter, Sr. Collection, Baton Rouge, LA. Ill.: Pennington, E.C., Downriver: Currents of Style in Louisiana Painting 1800-1950, Pelican Pub. Co., 1991, p. 139 Ill.: Pennington, E.C., Downriver: Currents of Style in Louisiana Painting 1800 1950, Pelican Pub. Co., 1991, p. 139. Note: Known for painting a variety of subject matter, including portraits, landscapes, genre scenes, and still lifes, Andres Molinary embraced the realist style of Academic Art that was prevalent in late 19th century American painting. Although portraiture was his main source of income, Molinary was highly involved in many aspects of the art community in New Orleans, including working with photography and co-founding and teaching at the Southern Art Union and the Artists’ Association of New Orleans. Frequenting the F. W. Seebold salons, as well as starting the "Cup and Saucer Club," which took place at his studio, Molinary’s acquaintances and friends included a diverse group of artists. Molinary was known for traveling outside of New Orleans and exploring the surrounding bodies of water, rivers, lakes, and bayous to find interesting compositions for his landscapes. The landscape here depicts an idyllic scene by Lake Pontchartrain; two figures interact on the porch of a cabin while a third mends fishing nets near the edge of the water. The low horizon line, a large portion of the canvas devoted to the sky and clouds, and the central position of the cabin indicate a traditional composition favored by Academic artists, while the feathery brushwork of the clouds and the cypress trees in the background bring a slightly more contemporary feel to the painting. This is particularly true when comparing Molinary’s work to earlier landscape artists such as Richard Clague, whose painting style was more influenced by the French Barbizon School. An artist, a teacher, and an organizer of the arts community, Molinary’s varied interests were as diverse as his background a Spaniard from Gibraltar whose travels took him through Italy, Africa, and Mexico, to finally settle in New Orleans. His colleagues worked in manners as wide-ranging as the Academic technique of classically trained Paul Poincy to the Impressionistic style of the Woodward brothers. Overall, this broad-minded approach served Molinary well in creating a well-rounded oeuvre, including portraits of prominent New Orleans citizens and beautifully detailed Louisiana landscapes such as the exhibition quality work offered here. Note: A talented landscape and portrait artist, Andres Molinary combined his interests to create this charming portrait of a "Young Girl in a Bed of Roses." She is attired in beautiful white dress with a pink ribbon that matches the abundant roses growing in the garden. The idyllic setting with the fountain in the background alludes to the affluence of the child's family. After traveling extensively as a young man throughout Europe, Mexico and South America, Molinary arrived in New Orleans to visit his uncle, a partner in an import business. Encouraged by his uncle, Molinary pursued a career as a professional artist.
